San Antonio Stars News Release

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars partnered with Bishop Jim Dorff and the Southwest Texas and Rio Grande United Methodist Churches to raise $46,500 for Nothing But Nets at Friday night's Faith and Family Night.

Nothing But Nets is a campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. A $10 donation purchases one anti-malaria bed net through Nothing But Nets, which then distributes the nets to families, along with measles vaccinations. Silver Stars center Ruth Riley is a spokesperson for the organization and has worked diligently to raise funds for their cause. An active member of the community and humanitarian, Riley frequently spends her off-season traveling to Africa both for Nothing But Nets and for TRIAD Trust, which works to increase HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

An Olympic gold medalist, Riley led Notre Dame to the 2001 National Championship, earning Most Outstanding Player honors at the Final Four. As a professional athlete, she helped the Detroit Shock to two WNBA championships, picking up MVP honors at the 2003 WNBA Finals. While her career on the court has been impressive, she has become more known for her contributions off the court.
