Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Sixto Sanchez struck out seven in 6.2 innings, and the Threshers put up seven runs early to take down the first-place Daytona Tortugas, 7-2 on 70s Night at Spectrum Field.

Sanchez (2-2) limited Daytona to just an unearned run on five hits and a walk across 6.2 innings, racking up seven strikeouts. The righty hit 100 mph twice on the evening.

Jose Pujols finished 4-for-4, and Austin Listi walked twice and doubled home a pair to extend his on-base streak to 16 games.

All seven runs for Clearwater (14-21) came across with two outs, as the Threshers jumped out to a sizeable lead early with a four-run first.

With two on and two out, Mickey Moniak cracked a single to right to score Arquimedes Gamboa and put runners at first and third.

Moniak took off on a 2-2 pitch to Edgar Cabral, and Cabral hit a chopper to the right side. Second baseman Brantley Bell came up firing toward third, but Moniak managed to get around the tag from third baseman Mitch Nay, and Listi scored to make it 2-0.

Pujols followed by ripping a two-run double up the first base line, bringing in Moniak and Cabral to extend the Clearwater lead to 4-0.

Clearwater poured it on in the fourth.

Pujols started the inning with a single to center, and with two outs, Gamboa dropped a single into left to put runners at the corners.

Haseley followed with a liner off the glove of the pitcher Ryan Olson (4-1) that settled in for a single, scoring Pujols. Listi then clubbed a double to the warning track in center field, plating both Gamboa and Haseley to open up a 7-0 lead.

The Tortugas (22-12) threatened in the fifth inning, when a hit batter and two singles loaded the bases with nobody out. Sanchez then proceeded to strike out Jose Siri and TJ Friedl swinging on 99 mph fastballs, then got Tyler Stephenson out looking on 98 mph heat.

Sanchez held Daytona off the board until the seventh, when a leadoff error led to a run on a Hector Vargas RBI groundout.

Ibandel Isabel homered for the second straight day for Daytona, lifting an opposite-field shot off Tommy Bergjans in the ninth to make it 7-2. Bergjans worked around a pair of singles to secure the final three outs.

The rubber match is set for Saturday on Motorcycle Night at Spectrum Field, with a 6:15 p.m. first pitch. Bailey Falter takes the hill for Clearwater against Wennington Romero, and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 6 p.m.
