Raleigh Rebels News Release
RALEIGH NC - The Raleigh Rebels, in their Thursday press conference, announced the signing of five players for the 2006 Season. The Rebels have signed FB/LB Chris Peavy, WR Lavel Bailey, OL/DL Issac Mooring, WR/LB Corey Peterson, and kicker Brian Bowers.
You would be hard pressed to find a player with more credentials than Chris Peavy (6'2", 255lbs). Chris was an All-American linebacker for Shaw University. He was a runner up for the Harlon Hill Trophy, given to the best Division II player in the country (and almost unheard of for a defensive player). He was named the CIAA Player of the Year for 2004 while leading the Shaw Bears to the CIAA Championship and a Pioneer Bowl victory over Tuskegee. "It is nice to find a player with Chris' character and immense skill this close to home. I think his intensity will be a spark for our squad in 2006", said Head Coach Steven G. Folmar
Bailey, (5'9, 185) has been well-traveled after a stellar career as a receiver at the University of Akron, where he set records for pass receptions and receiving yards. Lavel has been with the St. Louis Rams, and was the offensive specialist for the Cape Fear Wildcats of the arena football league 2 in 2005 before going to the Canadian Football League. He then finished with the Rebels at the conclusion of the 2005 AIFL season. He looks to be a feature receiver in the Rebel's offense.
Mooring, (6'3" 285) returns for his second season in Raleigh and could be the first of many Rebels who once wore the Carolina Blue. Mooring was a defensive end for the North Carolina Tar heels. "With Jason (Hall) and Troy (Bennett) on the line, I needed someone who can come in and rush the quarterback and Issac gives me that guy" said Folmar.
Corey Peterson (6'2" 185) returns in 2005 to give the Rebels some veteran leadership at wide receiver and linebacker. Peterson was a stand out receiver and team captain at Nassau College before joining the Rebels. "When I first met Corey I was impressed with his size as well as his leadership on the field" remarked Coach Folmar. Peterson is also versatile enough to play either defensive back or weak side linebacker on defense.
Brian Bowers (6'1" 185) will undoubtedly provide one of the more interesting stories for the Rebels in 2006. Bowers, from the University Georgia, was the back up to current Carolina Panther's kicker John Kasay. While at Georgia, Bowers was the teams academic All-American and had the 6th highest G.P.A. in the SEC. "There where a lot of questions when Brian came out, being older as well as being extremely successful outside of football, it made me question why a guy would come out for our team. Those fears were put to rest once we saw him kick. He was kicking like he was just coming out of college" commented Folmar. Bowers is also a Health Outcomes Researcher for GlaxoSmithKline.
