Portland Forest Dragons News Release
The contracts of St. Paul left-handed pitcher Jake Whitney and Sioux Falls right-handed pitcher Juan Renteria were sold to major league clubs Tuesday.
Whitney, 26, was acquired after two seasons with the Saints. He was named a Northern League post-season all-star after a 7-6 season and 2.75 earned run average with 20 walks and 81 strikeouts in 108 innings in 2001. He posted an 11-5 record and 3.12 ERA with 26 walks and 112 strikeouts in 132 2-3 innings in 2002.
Whitney was originally a 25th-round pick out of Iowa State University by the Houston Astros. He played three seasons in Single-A before the club released him.
Renteria, 22, was originally a 47th-round draft choice by Tampa Bay and after more than three seasons reached Single-A Bakersfield of the California League before his release on May 28, 2002. He started pitching for Sioux Falls on June 29 and finished with a 2-5 record, 3.07 ERA, 23 walks and 38 strikeouts in 58 2-3 innings for the Canaries.
Whitney and Renteria are the eighth and ninth former Northern League players whose contracts have been purchased by Major League clubs this off-season. They are the most recent since right-handed pitcher Conor Brooks was sold to Cincinnati by Brockton on Sept. 25.
