San Diego Riptide News Release

SAN DIEGO - After a climactic, energy-driven Chargers season, San Diegans need not look far to fill the void of the long NFL off-season. The San Diego Riptide enter their fourth af2 season this year, but with so many new faces in the front office and on the field, the franchise looks to rebuild and make a new name for itself.

"For the first time, this organization is solid from top to bottom," said Dan Foutz, newly appointed General Manager. "The most important goal of our new front office is to over-deliver on all promises made to fans, sponsorship partners, and the entire San Diego community."

There are multiple reasons why hopes are so high for the ‘Tide. Jon Runyan, right tackle for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, assumed the managing operator role in November of last year after spending last season as a minority interest holder. Runyan's first priority was to place the right people in the right positions in the front office and football operations department.

"I really feel that if you enjoy what you do, you will never WORK another day in your life," said Runyan.

"Jon, as an NFL player, brings credibility to the San Diego Riptide," said Riptide head coach Sean Ponder. "With the NFL becoming more involved with the AFL, the AFL can gain popularity and success with the fans."

After lighting up the scoreboard with 67 points last Saturday against the All-Japan Samurai Warriors, Ponder is confident that he has a quality football team on the field. Over 4,000 fans were in attendance for the preseason contest which also featured the Japan Fiesta.

"The fans came out to support their hometown football team," said Theresa Custodio, Director of Public Relations. "In addition, the local media and city embraced the event with open arms. After seeing how much support the community has given us for a preseason match up, we are extremely excited about the upcoming season."

Another factor that will play into the success of the team is the broadcast agreement with local Cox Channel 4 San Diego. Fans can now relive the arena experience in the convenience of their homes. The team is set to broadcast each of the eight home games on Sundays as well as an additional replay during each week.

"The television contract legitimizes the commitment of our organization to our fans and our sponsors," said Marty Caswell, Director of Corporate Sales. "Having this type of coverage creates more of an awareness factor that arena football has hit this city."

The San Diego Riptide season will undoubtedly be full of great surprises. After stepping into the arena for a Riptide game, fans will instantly become addicted to the up close and personal action that arena football is known for. With all of the improvements to the arena team, this season promises not to disappoint.
