Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release
The Corpus Christi Hammerheads started slow against the San Angelo Stampede Express Saturday night at the American Bank Center and found themselves trailing by 19 after three quarters of play 47 - 28. A furious 4th quarter comeback though sent the game to overtime where the Hammerheads fell short 53-50 in front of 5261 vocal fans.
The Express built an early 20 - 0 lead thanks to the strong play of their defense early on. The Hammerheads offense was stymied as Wes Cooper was under constant pressure and the rushing attack was bottled up. Conversely the Corpus Christi defense struggled containing the passing attack led by former Hammerhead Dustin Almond and the running game of Derrick Ross.
The Hammerheads did get a big lift from the special teams in the second quarter when Henry Hall had a 50 yard kick return to cut the deficit to 13. It was Hall's second return for a TD this season.
San Angelo continued to dominate until the fourth quarter began. Cory Brittian caught a 9 yard pass to close the gap to 11 at 9:4 and RB Redford Borel then ran it in from 4 yards out then added a successful 2 point conversion run at 6:23 to make the score 47 - 44.
Corpus Christi took their only lead of the night with 17 ticks on the clock after Borel scored his third rushing TD of thecontest from 2 yards out to make the score 50 - 47. The point after though was missed by kicker Stephen Moreno and it would comeback to haunt Corpus Christi.
San Angelo's offense then went back to work. Almond hit Chris McKinney with a 3 yard pass, but Hammerheads lineman Marvin James was flagged for roughing the passer moving the ball up to the Hammerheads 17 yard line. Almond then hit McKinney again for 2 yards to the 15. Following a false start against the Express pushing the ball back to the 20, newly signed Kicker Darren Brown nailed a 35 yard field goal with no time left to send the game to OT.
The Hammerheads were unable to score on the opening possession of the OT but San Angelo behind a study dose of Ross set up an 8 yard field goal by Brown to win the game.
San Angelo moves to 9-4 on the season and looks to secure the fourth seed in the IFL playoffs next week at home against the Amarillo Venom.
Despite the loss, the Hammerheads (6-7), clinched a playoff spot early Sunday morning when the Fairbanks Grizzlies beat the Kent Predators 49 - 42 in Fairbanks. While the 6th through 8th seeds will still be up for grabs next week, the Hammerheads will most likely head to Arkansas to take on the Diamonds in the first round of the IFL playoffs since that round is matched up regionally. The sixth seed is important however for Corpus Christi. With some help in the first round, the team still has a chance to host a second round match-up which is based upon playoff seeding.
The Hammerheads will closeout the regular season on the road Saturday night in Odessa against the West Texas Roughnecks with the opportunity to get that sixth spot. Fans can follow the action on ESPN Corpus Christi, (1230AM, 96.1FM and 103.3FM), with Scott Howe. The radio broadcast begins at 6:45pm with the kickoff at 7:11pm.
