Drive Top Charge Behind 28 Points from Murphy, Crawford
February 3, 2017 - NBA G League (G League)
Grand Rapids Drive News Release
CANTON -Losing Ray McCallum to the NBA earlier in the day did not stop the Grand Rapids Drive (15-16) from defeating the Canton Charge (16-13) on the road on Friday night. They prevailed 114-107 as Kevin Murphy and Jordan Crawford each scored 28 points.
It was the third win in a row for the Drive, who had won just one of seven before this three-game winning streak.
The Charge had a great first quarter, jumping out to a 38-26 advantage, but they managed just 17 points in the second quarter and the Drive pulled within one by halftime, and then pulled away slightly over the third and fourth quarters. Grand Rapids outscored Canton by four points in both the third and fourth quarters.
In addition to Murphy and Crawford, Henry Ellenson scored 17 points with 12 rebounds on assignment from the Detroit Pistons. Michael Gbinije, another Pistons player on assignment, was the only other Grand Rapids player in double digits with 14 points.
Canton's starters put up a number of great statistical feats, although no bench player scored more than four points for the Charge. John Holland scored 28 points with seven rebounds, Quinn Cook had 25 points and 11 assists, Chris Evans scored 20 points and Roosevelt Jones dominated the paint to the tune of 13 points, 20 rebounds and five assists.
The game was played at a breakneck pace, as Canton hoisted 105 shot attempts, bolstered by 21 offensive rebounds to nine for the Drive. They also gathered 28 assists to 16 from Grand Rapids. Despite the second-chance opportunities and ball movement, the Charge couldn't quite keep their efficiency up thanks to hitting just 8 of 35 attempts from behind the three-point line.
Both teams have now finished up the first game of a back-to-back. The Drive will host Raptors 905 at the DeltaPlex tomorrow night, while the Charge travel to Erie to square off with the BayHawks.
