May 14, 2011 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release
Solid pitching and clutch production from the bottom third of the order carried the RoughRiders to a 5-2 win over the Hooks last night. Two throwing errors by Corpus Christi were critical in allowing the home team to score all five of its runs. Carlos Pimentel (1-3) picked up his first win by holding the Hooks to two runs over six innings. Ramon Aguero, Fabio Castillo and Adalberto Flores each tossed an inning of shutout relief, with Flores earning his first save.
Davis Stoneburner (#7 in the order), Jose Felix (#8) and Guilder Rodriguez (#9) combined to go 4-for-9 with all five Frisco runs. Pitcher Dallas Keuchel's throwing error in the fifth opened the way to three RoughRider runs, while SS Wladimir Sutil's errant throw in the seventh permitted two runs to score. The Hooks equaled their season high with three errors last night.
Tonight's Matchup:
RHP Kyle Greenwalt (2-3, 6.03) vs. RHP Scott Feldman (0-0, 0.00)
Greenwalt, Houston's 20th-round selection in the 2007 draft out of Souderton Area High School in Pennsylvania, makes his seventh start this season and his second against Frisco. Sunday at San Antonio, Greenwalt allowed eight runs on 10 hits over five innings in a 9-1 loss to the Missions. Sawyer Carroll went 3-for-3 against Greenwalt and Jaff Decker clubbed a solo home run in the first. Prior to that outing, Greenwalt had not allowed more than four runs in any of his first five starts. Greenwalt spent all of last year with Lancaster in the California League, where he led the JetHawks in wins and ranked second on the club in starts (27) and innings pitched (136.2).
- Ranks second among Hooks starters in BB/9 IP (2.01)
- Improved his stock in the Arizona Fall League, going 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA in five starts for the Peoria Javelinas
- Was Greeneville's MVP in 2008 (6-4, 3.14 ERA), posting the second-best overall ERA (3.01) among Astros farmhands
Feldman, a 30th-round selection of the Rangers in 2003 out of the College of San Mateo (CA), makes his first appearance of the 2011 season in this rehab start for Frisco. A veteran of six seasons with the Rangers, Feldman had microfracture surgery on his right knee in early November and has been working his way back into shape since. He last took the mound September 28, 2010, in a home start against Seattle. In 29 appearances and 22 starts for the Rangers last year, Feldman went 7-11 with a 5.48 ERA. Feldman is a part of Whataburger Field history. On July 28, 2005, Feldman combined with A.J. Murray and Steve Karsay to record Frisco's first perfect game. Feldman worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save in Frisco's 3-0 win over the Hooks - the only combination, 9-inning perfect game in the history of the Texas League.
- In 2009 with Texas went 17-8 with a 4.08 ERA in 34 games and 31 starts
- Holds the Rangers record for most consecutive winning road starts (8) and most road wins in a season (12)
- Lifetime with the Rangers is 31-32 with a 4.80 ERA in 164 games and 78 starts
Streak at 8
Corpus Christi's current losing streak is the longest this season, but nowhere near the monster 16-game slide endured by last year's club. That streak started on the final day of the first half and stretched through the first 15 games of the second half. Here are some quick notes on the losing streak:
- Hooks are batting .211(48x228) and are hitting .200(13x65) w/RISP
- Hooks are averaging 3.25 runs per game
- Hooks have a 7.09 ERA (52 ER in 66.0 IP) and have allowed 83 hits and 35 walks
- Eight different pitchers have suffered a loss
Abreu returns
The "Tortuga" may have a new nickname...something like the "Yo-Yo." RHP Erick Abreu returns to Corpus Christi's roster tonight for his third stint with the Hooks this season. Abreu began the year with the Hooks, then joined AAA Oklahoma City for two days (May 1 & 2). He did not pitch for the RedHawks those two days, then returned to the Hooks for three days, only to go back to Oklahoma City on May 6 - where he has been until today.
In 4 appearances this past week with OKC, Abreu went 0-0 with a 14.54 ERA. In 9 games with the Hooks this year, all in relief, Abreu is 1-0 with a 3.95 ERA.
In addition to Abreu returning, RHP Andrew Robinson has been reassigned to Lancaster of the California League. In his two appearances with the Hooks, Robinson was 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA.
Without Martinez
This may have no bearing at all on the club's current eight-game slide, but LF J.D. Martinez was injured the night this losing streak began. Given that Martinez played in only the first inning of the May 5 loss to Midland (6-5 final) and injured his right leg on an RBI single, we're saying that he essentially did not play in that game. Given that proviso, the Hooks are 0-8 without Martinez, and 12-14 with him.
Pitching Rotation at Frisco
Sunday: LHP Xavier Cedeno (3-4, 4.63) vs. LHP Richard Bleier (0-0, 2.08)
