
Blue Jays Select High School Infielder with #12 Overall Pick

(Vancouver) - The Toronto Blue Jays have selected high school SS Jordan Groshans (Magnolia HS - Texas) with the #12 overall pick at the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. This marks the first time since 2012 that the Blue Jays have selected a first-round high school position player since outfielder D.J. Davis.
Last year, the Blue Jays used its first pick (#22) to select SS Logan Warmoth from the University of North Carolina in 2017 and used the franchise's 4th Round pick to grab SS Kevin Smith (Univ. of Maryland) a year ago.
The Toronto Blue Jays sent 17 of their 41 picks in last year's draft to Vancouver including eight (8) of the team's first ten picks from 2017. Since the Canadians and Toronto signed a Player Development Contract (2011) the Blue Jays have sent five (5) of their past six (6) 1st Round Picks to Vancouver including RHP Nate Pearson (2017), RHP TJ Zeuch (2016), RHP Jon Harris (2015) and C Max Pentecost (2014).
The #12 pick at the MLB First-Year Player Draft has yielded several notable names including 2B Delino Deshields (1987 - Montreal), LHP Billy Wagner (1993 - Houston), SS Nomar Garciaparra (1994 - Boston) and RHP Jared Weaver (2004 - Anaheim).

The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club opens the 2018 Northwest League season on the road with the season opener set for Friday, June 15th at 7:00pm as the C's travel to Eugene, Oregon to face the Emeralds just months after defeating the Chicago Cubs affiliate in the 2017 Northwest League Championship.
