Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Salisbury, Md- Once again, adversity brought the best out of the Shorebirds. Immediately after Kannapolis battled back to tie tonight's contest with two runs in the top of the eighth, Tyler Henson drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom half of the inning, forcing in Matt Angle to give Delmarva a 5-4 advantage that closer Mick Mattaliano would protect in the ninth for the ‘Birds' 25th victory of the year. With the win, the Shorebirds even up the five-game series at two-all with the finale coming up Friday night.

The game began with offense for Delmarva, as Angle singled to lead off the bottom of the first, stole second, advanced to third on a grounder to second, and came home on Joe Mahoney's RBI ground out to the right side. The lead was short-lived however, as the number nine hitter for the Intimidators recorded an RBI single, his first of three base hits on the evening, to even up the score at a run apiece.

The Shorebirds also received significant offensive production from their own number nine hitter. Shortstop Jason White, who tallied three base knocks on the evening, drove in a run with a one-out single in the second to re-give the edge to Delmarva. A couple batters later, a bases loaded walk to Ryan Adams plated Brendan Monaghan and the Shorebirds had a 3-1 lead.

Fast forwarding to the eighth, the Birds saw their 4-2 advantage evaporate due to a couple clutch hits by Kannapolis. With two outs and the tying run on third base, a wild pitch allowed the Intimidators to even the score at four.

But the Birds rallied in the bottom of the inning to set up Mattaliano for his first win of the season. Delmarva starter Sean Gleason received a no decision, but was solid in his five innings on the hill. Gleason allowed just one run on four hits, striking out five and walking three. The ‘Birds have won all four times that Gleason has started this season. The final game of the series is Friday night at Perdue, the first pitch is set for 7:05pm.
