Slammers Battle Back But Fall Short in Extras

Joliet Slammers News Release
Joliet, IL- In a game that saw four defensive miscues, the Joliet Slammers (27-39) came back to tie the Frontier Greys (30-34) but were outlasted in ten innings.
Frontier got to Slammers' starter Andrew Strenge right off the bat. In the top of the first 3B Julio Rodriguez singled to right. 1B Scott Carcaise doubled to left which scored Rodriguez from first to give the Greys an early 1-0 lead.
The Slammers had an answer for the Greys and starter Justin D'Alessandro in their half of the first. SS Alfredo Rodriguez singled and stole second. 3B Mike Garza walked. Both runners moved up a base on a ball in the dirt. LF Phil Bates continued his hot hitting with an RBI single to right center that scored Rodriguez to tie the game at one.
Joliet took the lead in the second. In his first plate appearance of the series RF Casey Fletcher doubled to left. 2B Max Casper grounded out to second advancing the runner to third. With CF Charlie White up facing a two ball one strike count, Fletcher broke for home and slid in safely giving the Slammers a 2-1 lead.
Andrew Strenge would be pulled after three but not before Frontier exploded for five runs in the frame. 3B Julio Rodriguez doubled to right center. SS Brandon Tierney reached on an error by Mike Garza that allowed Rodriguez to score, Tierney advanced to second on the throw home from left. Scott Carcaise singled to center driving in Tierney. Andrew Strenge intentionally walked C Dillon Haupt to put two on. DH Michael Antonio hit a three run homerun, his first of the year extending the Greys' lead to 6-2.
In the bottom of the fourth the Slammers trimmed the lead to three. DH Hunter Ridge led off with a walk. C Jack Cleary followed with a double down the left field line. RF Casey Fletcher chopped out to the pitcher but Ridge scored from third to make it 6-3.
Joliet crossed the plate again in the seventh. Mike Garza made up for his error by hitting his fourth long ball of the year off of reliever Max Homick, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
The Slammers came back to tie the game in the eighth. With reliever Nick McBride in 2B Max Casper doubled. SS Alfredo Rodriguez cranked out his third homer of the year to knot it up at six.
Navery Moore came into the ninth and shut down the Greys offense but the tenth inning was a different story. Scott Carcaise reached base for the fourth time with a walk. Dillon Haupt reached on a fielder's choice. 2B Zach Tanner broke the tie with a two run shot giving the Greys an 8-6 lead.
Brent Choban came in to close things out for Frontier and earned his first save of the year. Steven Wehr was credited with the win (1-1) Navery Moore got the loss (0-2). Our Merchants and manufacturers Bank Player of the Game was Alfredo Rodriguez. He went 2-for-4, walked twice and hit the tying home run in the eighth. Joliet is on the road against River City on Tuesday and return home to battle Florence for a weekend series.
