Redbirds Rebound with 7-1 Win over Sacramento

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Randal Grichuk and Luis Mateo each homered to power the Memphis Redbirds to a 7-1 win over the visiting Sacramento River Cats in the second game of a four-game series on Thursday night at AutoZone Park.

Combined with a Sounds loss in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader in Nashville, Memphis (72-60) temporarily takes a half-game lead in the PCL American Southern Division with 11 games remaining to play.

Mateo drove in a season-high four of Memphis' seven runs in the victory. Grichuk's long ball was his team-leading 24th of the season.

Catcher Ed Easley went 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored, extending his hitting streak to seven games. Outfielder Tommy Pham recorded a hit for his ninth consecutive game while stole his team-leading 15th base.

Memphis cashed in three walks by Sacramento starter and Collierville native Drew Pomeranz in the fifth, taking a 3-0 lead over the River Cats. After the bases were full of Redbirds due to the three consecutive free passes, Pete Kozma hit an infield groundout for the first run. Two batters later, Mateo delivered a two-run single up the middle.

Sacramento scored its lone run in the fifth as former Cardinals farmhand Jose Martinez drove in Nick Buss with a two-out single to right.

Mateo's two-run blast in the sixth ended Pomeranz's evening in the sixth, extending the Redbird lead to 6-1. Mike O'Neill added a sacrifice fly in the eighth to conclude the night's scoring.

Redbirds starter Boone Whiting gave up one run on five hits in 4 2/3 innings for the no-decision. The right-hander is sporting a 2.52 ERA (14er/50.0ip) in his last 11 games (10 starts) since June 16.

Left-hander Justin Wright followed with 2 1/3 scoreless innings to move to 4-0 in his Triple-A career.

Memphis and Sacramento continue its series at 7:05 pm on Friday night as PCL wins leader Tim Cooney (12-6, 3.66) takes the mound against River Cats right-hander Arnold Leon (10-6, 5.27).

The Redbirds are giving 2,000 commemorative Carlos Martinez bobbleheads when games open at 5 pm. The final Coors Light Block Party will also occur, featuring 16 oz. Coors Lights for $2 and live music from for two hours in the AutoZone Park plaza.
