Goldeyes lose opener in Sioux Falls
August 16, 2014 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes didn't do themselves any favours in the standings, but the out-of-town scoreboard didn't hurt them either.
The Goldeyes (51-33) dropped a 5-1 decision to the Sioux Falls Canaries (29-56) in the first game of a three-game set at Sioux Falls Stadium before 4, fans Friday night.
Even with the loss, Winnipeg remains six games ahead of the St. Paul Saints for first place in the American Association's North Division, as the Saints lost 7-5 to the New Jersey Jackals.
Sioux Falls quickly opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning off Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida, as the Canaries scored on three consecutive singles.
The game stayed that way until the top of the sixth when the Goldeyes scored their only run of the game on a Casey Haerther single.
A Brandon Jones double in the bottom of the seventh put the game away for the Canaries.
Brock Bond and Tyler Kuhn each had a pair of hits for the Goldeyes.
Salamida surrendered all five runs and was tagged with the loss after pitching 6 1/3 innings. Kaohi Downing finished the game out of the bullpen with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Canaries starter Matt Wickswat pitched six innings to earn the win.
The series continues with the second game Saturday night in Sioux Falls. Coverage on Jewel 101 (100.7 FM) begins with Around the Association at 5 p.m. Game time is 6 p.m.
