Calgary Stampeders News Release
With the Canadian Football League season heading into the stretch run, warm sunny summer days will soon be nothing but a memory and it will once again be time to dig into storage closets for cold-weather gear.
The Calgary Stampeders ask their fans to remember the less-fortunate members of the community who don't have suitable winter wear as the club launches its 11th annual Share the Warmth coat drive in support of The Salvation Army. This year's drive is enthusiastically supported by radio station Q107, Calgary's Classic Rock - The Jeff & Sarah Show.
The official collection will take place during the Oct. 11 game at McMahon Stadium as the Stamps play host to the BC Lions but fans can make donations prior to date by dropping coats off at the Q107 donation box on the second floor of Eau Claire Market (200 Barclay Parade SW).
In additional, local schools will be taking part by conducting their own coat drives. Participating schools will have a chance to win a tour of the Stampeders locker-room and every student who contributes to the cause will receive a Stampeders horse decal.
"The weather may still feel like summer but we all know that the cold days and snow aren't that far away," said Stampeders quarterback Drew Tate, the team representative for the coat drive since 2011. "Stamps fans have been fantastic in supporting this cause for many years and I know they'll come through and Share the Warmth again this time."
"For far too many Calgarians, a warm coat is considered a luxury," said Captain Pam Goodyear, Divisional Secretary for Public Relations and Development for The Salvation Army. "Just think, that coat in the back of your closet that you haven't worn for a couple years could keep someone warm this winter and imagine the impact it could have if every fan brought a coat to donate at the game."
"We've called Calgary home for a year now and are thrilled to partner with two of the city's outstanding organizations, the Calgary Stampeders and the Salvation Army," said Sarah Crosbie, who along with Jeff Brown co-hosts the Q107 morning program. "Together, we believe we can make this the most successful coat drive ever."
Once again, the Stampeders coaches, administration staff and Stampeder Outriders are also rising to the occasion by conducting their own coat drive to benefit the Salvation Army.
The generosity of Stampeders fans has resulted in the collection of nearly 10,000 coats and more than $20,000 in cash donations since the inception of the program.
The Stampeders' next home action comes on Friday when Calgary hosts the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Kickoff at McMahon Stadium is at 7 p.m. and tickets are available at Stampeders.com.
