Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Eleven Quakes batters fell victim to the strikeout on Sunday as Rancho fell to the visiting Stockton Ports, 6-4, at LoanMart Field, capping off the first half of the 2013 season.
Stockton starter Josh Bowman and reliever Blake Hassebrock both entered Sunday with ERAs over 5.00, but struck out five Quakes apiece and combined to allow just one earned run on five hits over seven innings.
Bowman (W, 1-1) earned his first victory with Stockton after making eight starts for the Midland RockHounds to start the season. He entered Sunday's game with a 21.32 ERA after two starts.
Hits were hard to come by for the Quakes, as they collected just four before a late ninth-inning rally bumped it to seven. Jonathan Garcia continued his recent production at the plate with an RBI triple in the sixth inning during a 2-for-4 day.
The hits were not hard to come by for the Ports, however. Stockton racked up 12 of them, knocking at least two off each Quakes pitcher to take the mound. Addison Russell paced the Ports with a 2-for-5 day at the plate, including a double and a pair of RBIs. Antonio Lamas and Rashun Dixon, who scored three runs, also enjoyed multi-hit efforts.
The Quakes tacked on a pair in the ninth when O'Koyea Dickson walked and Scott Schebler followed up with a mammoth two-run shot high off the video board beyond the right field wall, his third of the series and ninth of the year.
A strange series of events took place in the bottom of the second inning, following Dickson reaching base after being hit by a Bowman pitch.
Home plate umpire David Marcoe stopped play when Bowman dropped to the ground as a swarm of bees buzzed over the field. Stockton first baseman Max Muncy, Dickson and Quakes hitting coach Johnny Washington followed suit as the swarm made its way over the stands and out of the park before play resumed.
The Quakes sit eight games under the .500 mark (31-39) as the first half comes to a close. Rancho will embark on another playoff quest following the All-Star Break in San Jose, where Noel Cuevas will represent the Quakes.
The California League-Carolina League All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday at San Jose Municipal Stadium, home of the North Division First Half Champion San Jose Giants. The game can be seen live on MILB.TV.
Following the break and a subsequent seven-game road trip, the Quakes return home to face the South Division First Half Champion Lancaster JetHawks on Thursday, June 27 to kick off a four-game set to end the month.
