Salem RidgeYaks News Release
The Salem Sox finish the first half of their season with a Sunday afternoon doubleheader against Lynchburg... First pitch at 1:05...
First Half Finales: The Salem Sox take the field on Sunday afternoon for the final time before the All-Star Break, with Lynchburg still in town for a doubleheader. It'll be the fourth doubleheader between the Sox and Hillcats in the last nine days, with the previous three having been splits, with the home team winning game one and the road team taking game two. Salem has gone 8-4 against Lynchburg this season, its best record against any opponent in the league. While the Northern Divisional first half race was decided on Thursday when Potomac clinched the title, the Southern Division chase officially ended last night, with Winston-Salem's loss securing Myrtle Beach the first-half title. Here we are in mid-June and two of the Carolina League's four playoff berths have been determined.
De La Cruising: With his bases loaded double on Saturday night, Keury De La Cruz remained red hot and extended his hitting streak to 16 games, in which he is batting an incredible .455 (25-for-55)! With Lynchburg's Elmer Reyes failing to get a hit on Friday, his 15-game streak, the longest individual streak in the Carolina League this year, came to an end. That puts De La Cruz in a position to surpass the longest streak in the league in 2013 in Sunday's action. Since June 3, De La Cruz owns the best average in the entire Advanced-A level of minor league baseball. He has recorded nine extra-base hits and 19 RBI during his hitting streak, which includes his fourth homer of the season that he jacked in game one on Friday night.
All-Star Owens: Salem sends All-Star lefthander Henry Owens to the mound in game one on Sunday for his 13th and final start of the half. His 2.95 ERA is sixth in the league entering the day and his 73 strikeouts are third. Owens has not allowed any runs in his last two starts, both of which lasted five innings and became Red Sox shutout victories. Owens has surrendered just one run over his last three starts, permitting only seven hits in his last 16 innings. While Owens was voted into the All-Star Game, he will not be pitching in San Jose because of his job starting today.
Can Cuevas Continue?: Game Two starter William Cuevas makes his 12th start of the year, and he'll try to replicate his most recent outing when he tossed six strong innings, allowing one run, to earn the victory against Wilmington. Cuevas also pitched well against Lynchburg in two starts vs. the Hillcats earlier this year, permitting three runs on six hits over 10 innings. Cuevas has pitched shut-down first innings in 10 of his 11 starts this season.
85 Game Scoring Streak Ends: The 2013 nearly made it to the All-Star Break without being shutout, a quest that ended in game two on Friday night. Without top hitter Garin Cecchini in the lineup, the Sox failed to score in the nightcap, suffering its first shutout since August 12, 2012, when the Sox fell 5-0 in Wilmington. It ended an 85-game streak of scoring at least one run in every game. After Friday night, every team in the league has been blanked at least once. Interestingly, Salem remains the only team in the league that has not been shutout twice this year. Every other squad has been blanked multiple times, with Wilmington having been shutout eight times.
