New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats beat Bowie Saturday night by the score of 4-3 at New Britain Stadium. Starter RHP Alex Meyer was a standout on this night, setting a season-high mark with ten strikeouts.

The Rock Cats got on the board early when SS Danny Santana ripped a Clark offering that dropped just in front of LF Garabez Rosa and plated both LF Daniel Ortiz and C Josmil Pinto.

New Britain would add on to that lead two innings later when Ortiz dropped a drag bunt that was fielded by Clark who then threw it away, allowing 1B Nate Hanson to score on the play. Two batters later it was Ortiz who scored on a wild pitch from the Bowie starter.

Meyer was dominant through the first three innings, striking out five and only giving up one hit, however his shutout bid was erased with a solo homerun by 1B Brandon Waring. The right-hander would handcuff hitters all night, striking out ten while only walking two and giving up two hits over 6 1/3 innings pitched. He now has 73 strikeouts on the season, ranking him second in the Eastern League.

Bowie would mount a comeback to start the eighth inning when they managed to get bases loaded against reliever LHP Blake Martin. Martin would be relieved by RHP A.J. Achter who gave up a 2-run single to RF Henry Urrutia but they would not score the tying run thanks to an outfield assist from Ortiz.

The visiting Baysox would put one last scare into the Rock Cats fans with a runner on second and two outs. Pinch hitter Luis Martinez hit a shot up the middle Santana played late-inning hero when he came streaking behind the second base bag and threw out Martinez at first to end the game and preserve the win for New Britain.

The Rock Cats wrap up their homestand tomorrow before hitting the road next week against Richmond and Bowie. They will take on the Baysox at 1:35 p.m. tomorrow as LHP Logan Darnell takes on LHP Jake Pettit.
