Jackson Generals News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - Another solid start by the Jackson Generals' (21-25) pitching staff was helped with Leon Landry's second home run of the series to defeat the Montgomery Biscuits (23-25), 3-1 Saturday night. Scoring has been limited thus far in the series, as all three games have been dominated by pitching.
The Biscuits started off the scoring, taking a page out of the Generals' playbook. Similar to Friday night's leadoff home run from Generals' outfielder Leon Landry, Montgomery's Kevin Kiermaier started the home half of the first with a solo shot. Just like that, starting pitcher Chance Ruffin and the Generals were in a hole.
Jackson was able to make some noise though, and take the lead back in the third, as Landry (1-5, R, 2 RBI, 2 K) left his mark on the game with his team-leading fifth long ball. The Generals scored once more off of an RBI two-bagger from recently added Denny Almonte (2-4, RBI, K), proving to be enough for the consistently stellar pitching staff.
That stellar staff got another clutch start, this time from Ruffin (W, 2-2, 2.72). The University of Texas alum went six strong, sitting down a season-high seven batters by strikeout. His only blemish was the solo home run, as Ruffin did not allow any free passes to a Biscuit batter.
Nick Hill (2.33, .200 opponent's average) continued his impressive streak by adding two more scoreless innings to his record. Tyler Burgoon (2.03, 2 saves) made good on his save opportunity, finishing the ninth frame with two strikeouts.
Biscuit starter Merrill Kelly (L, 3-5, 3.81) turned in the other half of the pitching duel Saturday night. Kelly went seven, but six hits and three runs turned out to be too much for Montgomery to overcome.
The Generals offense got the job done, but still ended with many missed opportunities. The team left seven on base and was 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. They mustarded eight hits, as both Almonte and Francisco Martinez (2-4, K) led with multi-hit games.
Jackson will look to build on momentum heading into Memorial Day with game four on Sunday. Taijuan Walker (3-4, 2.77) looks to put his last start behind him as he goes tomorrow. Enny Romero (2-1, 3.95) gets the call for Montgomery. Game time is scheduled for 6:05 CST. The game can be heard on 96.5 ESPN Radio, TuneIn Radio App. and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
