San Jose Giants News Release

ADELANTO - The High Desert Mavericks scored 11 unanswered runs in an 11-6 victory over the San Jose Giants on Wednesday evening at Mavericks Stadium. In the opener of a four-game series, High Desert rallied from an early 6-0 deficit taking the lead for good with a seven-run bottom of the sixth inning. The loss drops San Jose's record to 30-16 - 1 1/2 games ahead of the Visalia Rawhide (28-17) for first place in the North Division.

Jeff Arnold (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) homered for the second straight game while Angel Villalona (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) collected a pair of hits to lead the Giants offensively. San Jose though failed to score after the third inning en route to suffering the loss.

The Giants took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth before High Desert erupted against the San Jose bullpen. Facing Luis Rojas, Ramon Morla began the frame with a single. After Kevin Rivers bounced into a fielder's choice for the first out, Steven Baron singled to put runners on first and second. Dillon Hazlett then lined a single into right center plating Rivers with the first run of the inning. Jose Casilla was then summoned from the bullpen, but he promptly allowed an RBI double down the left field line off the bat of Chris Taylor to tie the game 6-6. Casilla then balked home the go-ahead run before Jamal Austin ripped an RBI triple into deep right center for an 8-6 Mavericks advantage. The onslaught continued when the next batter, Ji-Man Choi, delivered an RBI single before Jabari Blash hit an opposite-field two-run homer to right for an 11-6 lead.

High Desert sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth scoring seven runs on eight hits.

Rojas (4-2) was saddled with the loss after surrendering four runs (all earned) on five hits over 2 1/3 innings. Rojas struck out two and walked none. Casilla was also charged with four runs (all earned) on five hits in just 2/3 of an inning.

Trailing 11-6, the Giants were retired 1-2-3 in the seventh and eighth innings by High Desert reliever Sean Gi Kim. In the ninth, John Polonius singled with two outs before Brock Bond reached on an error, but Shawn Payne grounded out to end the game.

Mayckol Guaipe (1-2) was credited with the win for the Mavericks after tossing three scoreless innings of relief. Guaipe, who entered the game to begin the top of the fourth, allowed just one hit with one walk and two strikeouts during his stint on the mound. He retired nine out of the last 10 batters that he faced. Kim earned his first save of the year with three shutout innings to finish the game.

San Jose initially jumped out to the big lead with a single tally in the top of the second before a five-run third inning. In the second, Villalona singled with one out, advanced to second when Arnold walked, moved to third on Elliott Blair's fly out and scored on a wild pitch.

The third-inning rally began with a one-out single from Bond before Payne connected for an RBI double into the left field corner. After Ryan Cavan flied out, Mac Williamson reached on an error to bring home Payne for a 3-0 lead. Villalona then came through with an RBI double before Arnold launched a two-run homer to deep left center field. The home run was Arnold's eighth of the season as the Giants extended their lead to 6-0.

Jason Forjet started on the mound for San Jose in his California League debut. Forjet worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the first to keep High Desert off the scoreboard before pitching a 1-2-3 second inning. The Mavericks through broke through with three runs against Forjet in the third to trim the lead to 6-3. Chris Taylor started the frame with a home run to straightaway center to get High Desert on the scoreboard. After Austin reached on an infield single and stole second, Choi hit a grounder to second that misplayed by Cavan. The error allowed Austin to score the second run of the inning. Forjet followed by issuing a walk to Blach before Daniel Paolini singled to load the bases. Two batters later, Rivers hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-3.

Forjet allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in three innings. He walked three and struck out three.

Rojas breezed through a perfect bottom of the fourth in his first inning of work. He then allowed a single run in the fifth before the Mavericks exploded in the bottom of the sixth.

The Giants managed only two hits over the last six innings of the game - a leadoff single from Chris Lofton in the top of the fourth and Polonius' two-out single in the ninth.
