Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS- Tonight's game between the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and Corpus Christi Hooks featured the top two pitchers in the Texas League in terms of ERA, but the Hooks offense prevented a pitchers' duel as they defeated the Naturals 8-2 in the first game of a three-game series.

The Naturals scored a first inning run off of Corpus Christi starter Jake Buchanan on a Mitch Canham groundout that scored Orlando Calixte. In the second inning, the Naturals hit three singles but Manny Piña was thrown out at home and the Naturals didn't score. Corpus Christi tied the game in the bottom half of the frame with a one-out single from Michael Burgess. The Hooks added a run in each of the next two innings, while the Naturals saw a pair of rallies end on double plays.

A four-run fifth for Corpus Christi gave the Hooks some breathing room and also saw the Naturals lose manager Brian Poldberg, as he was ejected by home plate umpire Matt Benham after George Springer and Rene Garcia scored on a Domingo Santiago double. Naturals starter Yordano Ventura was also ejected in the inning.

The Naturals got a run back in the top of the sixth as Matt Fields extended his hitting streak to five games with a double that scored Yem Prades. Corpus Christi got the run back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Calixte, Carlo Testa and Angel Franco each had two hits for the Naturals.

Buchanan earns his fifth win of the season as he allowed one run on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts in five innings. Josh Fields and Carlos Quevedo each fired a scoreless inning in relief.

Ventura is charged with his second loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

The Naturals and Hooks continue the series tomorrow. Brooks Pounders (1-1, 2.20 ERA) is scheduled to start for Northwest Arkansas. Bobby Doran (5-1, 3.92) is the scheduled starter for Corpus Christi.
