Ryan Flaherty's RBI single in the fifth inning plated Xavier Avery and the Norfolk Tides salvaged a series split with a 4-3 win over the Durham Bulls in front of 3, 843 fans at Harbor Park Wednesday night.

Durham wasted little time jumping on Tides starter Josh Stinson (3-1) in the first as Vince Belnome's RBI double gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead three batters into the game.

Norfolk countered with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning off Bulls starter Alex Torres as Brandon Wood delivered a bases loaded two-out double to clear the bases and the Tides held a 3-1 advantage after one inning.

Brandon Guyer tripled and scored in the second inning to cut the Norfolk lead to 3-2, a score that would remain until the fifth when Tim Beckham singled to open the inning and scored on a Belnome single to knot the score at three apiece.

Torres would not factor into the decision, departing after the fourth, charged with three runs on two hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Will Inman (0-1) came on to face the Tides in fifth but with one out, Avery walked, stole second base, and scored on Flaherty's two-out single to put Norfolk in the lead, 4-3.

Stinson was lifted following the sixth inning after allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts and the Bulls threatened in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases with three consecutive singles to begin the inning off of new Tides reliever Mike Belfiore. The left-hander struck out Belnome for the first out and gave way to Manny Delcarmen, who entered Wednesday having retired all 17 base runners he'd inherited this season. Delcarmen induced a pop out and a ground out as Norfolk escaped damage in the frame, as Durham left the bases loaded.

The game remained 4-3 into the ninth inning as Jairo Asencio relieved Delcarmen, who tossed a perfect eighth. Asencio set the Bulls down 1-2-3 in the ninth to register his 11th save of the season, tied for second in the International League.

The Tides travel to Pennsylvania for a brief four-game road trip to take on the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Thursday. Jair Jurrjens (4-1, 3.14) takes the ball for Norfolk. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
