Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The pitching had been on display over the previous four wins, but on Tuesday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark, the bats picked up the arms, blasting High Desert for 12 runs, and hanging on to win a zany see-saw affair, 12-10.

In all, the game featured four lead changes and three ties, starting early, with High Desert picking up a pair of first inning runs on a double and homer, before the Blaze came back with two runs of their own on three hits and a walk off Cameron Hobson.

In the second inning, the Blaze took a 3-2 lead on a Ryan Wright solo homer, the first of two longballs in the game for Wright, and Bakersfield added two more in the 3rd on Kyle Waldrop's 9th homer of the season, a two-run shot over the catwalk to bring the Blaze lead to 5-2.

High Desert would not be denied, as the Mavs plated three runs in the 5th off Blaze starter Jacob Johnson, all three scoring on wild pitches and a passed ball, and the Mavs took a 6-5 lead to the bottom half.

But the Blaze came right back for the first of two straight innings. Bakersfield scored the tying run in the 5th on a Juan Silverio single, and after the Mavs pushed back ahead 7-6 in the 6th, the Blaze locked it up with back-to-back two-out triples.

It seemed as though the first team to put up a zero on the defensive side might get the win, and sure enough, that is how the game played out. Kyle McMyne (W, 1-2) entered for the Blaze in the 7th, and stranded two runners in the top half before the Blaze batted around in the bottom of the inning off Mavs relievers Matt Brazis (L, 2-1) and Jeremy Dobbs, scoring five times (including Wright's second dinger of the game), and grabbing a 12-7 lead.

The game still would not get easy for the Blaze. McMyne retired two batters in the 8th before giving way to Carlos Gonzalez, and for the first time this year, Carlos struggled, walking three batters in the 8th and allowing a three-run double to bring the Mavs to within 12-10.

Fortunately for the Blaze, Carlos settled down in the 9th, allowing just a walk before setting down the next three batters to preserve the win, the fifth in a row for the surging Blaze.

Also of note, Ryan Wright posted an unreal series against the Mavericks, homering three times, doubling three times, and driving in 8 runs.

The win improves the Blaze to 16-29 on the year, as the team continues to show improved plate discipline and better fight while completing their first series sweep of the season.

The team heads into a Wednesday off-day before resuming the current 7-game homestand against the Stockton Ports on Thirsty Thursday at 7:30pm, with Drew Granier going for Stockton and reigning California League Pitcher of the Week Jonathan Moscot for the Blaze. Gates open at 6:30pm, and beers are just one dollar for two hours!
