New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - A night after pounding out 13 runs and 17 hits, the bats of New Jersey Jackals stayed red hot on Tuesday afternoon, as New Jersey jumped out to a fast 8-0 lead en route to a thrilling 9-6 victory over the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park in Iowa.

Like on Monday night, the Jackals wasted little time in taking the lead. After a triple by Chris Curran to open up the first inning, Jeremy Barnes hit his second homer of the season, this one to deep left, giving New Jersey a quick 2-0 advantage.

The duo of Curran and Barnes would be at it again in the top half of the third. With two out, Curran singled and stole second. Barnes later tripled to drive in Curran to make it 3-0, Jackals.

Barnes had a huge afternoon, going 3-of-5 with three RBI and the homerun.

Isaac Pavlik was very good in his second start of the season. He went through the Explorers order with ease through the game's first five innings, allowing only two hits and striking out four in the process.

Pavlik did get touched up for a few runs in his final two innings of work, but it was still a very solid outing for his first victory of the year. Pavlik's final line: seven innings of six hit ball, with three runs and five strikeouts.

Meanwhile, the Jackals' offense continued to pound Sioux City starter Josh Rainwater.

In the fourth inning, New Jersey scratched out three runs, thanks to an RBI Fielder's Choice by Jose Cuevas; an RBI single by Jaren Matthews, and a Sac Fly RBI by Bryan Sabatella to increase the lead to 6-0.

In the fifth, after singles by Barnes, and Gaetano Giunta (3-of-4) and a walk to Chris Duffy; Cuevas (1-of-4, 3RBI) ended Rainwater's afternoon with a two-run single to make it 8-0. Rainwater lasted four-and-a-third innings for Sioux City, allowing eight runs on 11 hits.

The Jackals capped off their offensive explosion in the seventh inning when Yazy Arbelo (2-of-5, HR) cracked his first homer as a Jackal to right to give New Jersey a 9-1 advantage.

Little did anyone know that the RBI hits by Arbelo and Cuevas would loom large later the game.

Jackals reliever Chad Rose got into trouble in the bottom of the eighth, when Yusuke Inoguchi drove in Eliezer Mesa with a single to cut the Jackals lead to five runs, 9-4.

From there Rose fell into further trouble when he loaded the bases with only one out. He was able to strike out Explorers third baseman Bryan Pounds swinging, but couldn't find that final strike against shortstop Leugim Barroso, who lined a two-run double to cut the Jackals lead to 9-6.

Like on Monday night, Jackals manager Joe Calfapietra went to the bullpen, calling upon Jon Lucas to get out trouble.

Lucas, who has been pretty solid this year, giving up only two unearned runs in two-and-two-thirds innings, induced a slow ground ball to first off the bat of Alberto Espinosa to end the threat.

Keith Cantwell came on in the ninth and pitched superbly to close out the ball game and notch his first save of 2013.

The Jackals (3-3) are back at .500 and tied with Rockland and Newark for second place in the Can-Am League. The Jackals will try to sweep the Sioux City Explorers on Wednesday night when Kyle Greenwalt toes the rubber against Jason Jarvis. The game will be live on beginning at 7:50 p.m. on Jackals.com, by clicking the Listen Live button on Fan Central.
