
Generals Split Doubleheader with Birmingham Saturday

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Generals (18-23) and Barons (27-16) split a doubleheader on Saturday by losing game one, 2-1 and winning game two 6-2. In game two, the Generals pounded out 12 hits as Leon Landry, Brandon Bantz and Leury Bonilla tallied multi-hit games. The Generals lead the current series 2-1 and are 3-5 so far in the homestand.
Game 1:
The Barons struck first in the second, taking an early advantage on a home run by catcher Mike Blanke.
The Barons' right fielder Trayce Thompson added another run to Birmingham's total with a solo homer to left. After four, Birmingham led 2-0.
Generals' third basemen Vinnie Catricala (1-3, HR) homered to left to cut the lead in half. One batter later, Julio Morban (1-3, 2B) doubled to the right center gap and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Francisco Martinez (0-2). The 2-1 score would be the final as the Generals could not cash in Morban at third.
The Generals' starter Chance Ruffin (L, 1-2, 5.0,3,2,2,0,6,2) endured the loss on the mound. Barons' starter Erik Johnson earned the win. Ryan Kussmaul (4) picked up the save as the Generals fell 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader.
Game 2:
Similar to the first game, the Barons' struck first with a solo shot. Marcus Semien launched a homer to left to give the Barons the lead early.
In the second, Birmingham tacked on their second run by Cody Puckett. Puckett singled to left which plated Tyler Saladino. Halfway through two innings, the Barons led 2-0.
The first base runner for Jackson came in the bottom of the second. Leury Bonilla (2-2, 3 RBI, 2B) reached first by a two-out walk.
Jackson's catcher Brandon Bantz (2-2, 2B, R, BB) led off the third with a double and then Leon Landry (3-3, R) laid a beautiful bunt single down the first base line. With Bantz on third and Landry on first, Gabriel Noriega (1-3, 2 RBI, R, 2B) gapped a bases clearing double to left center that evened the score at 2-2. Patrick Brady (1-4) continued the hit parade with a single to shallow center. With runners on the corners, Vinnie Catricala (1-3, R, 2B, BB) grounded into a double play, Noriega held at third. Steven Proscia (1-4, RBI, R) lined a soft single to center which plated Noriega and gave the Generals a 3-2 edge. Generals'right fielder James Jones (1-3, R) moved Proscia to second by a single to shallow left. Both runners advanced up a bag. Bonilla insured the Generals'lead with a lined single to right. After a five-run third, the Generals led 5-2.
Catricala led off the fifth with a double to deep center that bounced off the wall. Bonilla warranted the Generals' lead and brought Catricala in with a two-out double to right center. After five, the Generals led 6-2.
LHP Kyle Hunter (W, 0-0, 4.0,5,2,2,1,1,1) earned the win in his second career start. Birmingham's lefty Wes Whisler (L, 0-2, 2.0,4,3,3,1,0,0) encountered the loss. Tyler Burgoon (2.0,4,0,0,0,3,0) provided two solid innings of work out of the pen, and struck out the side to end the sixth while the Barons' were threatening. Carson Smith (1.0, 0,0,0,0,1,0) shut the door in a non-save situation in the seventh.
Game four of the series is scheduled for Sunday, first pitch is 6:05 p.m. CST. RHP Taijuan Walker (3-3, 2.09) will start for the Generals.
