RailRiders Conclude Homestand with 3-2 Loss to Braves
May 13, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - Moosic, Pa. - Trailing 2-1 entering the seventh inning on Monday night, the Gwinnett Braves (Triple-A/Atlanta) rallied for a 3-2 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (New York Yankees) at PNC Field. Ernesto Mejia's home run in the ninth inning proved to be the winning run for Gwinnett.
Curtis Granderson played in what could be his final rehab game. Batting second and playing left field, Granderson singled in the fourth and hit the ball hard in the first and fifth innings. In addition to his eighth hit as a RailRider, Granderson drew a walk.
Gwinnett opened the scoring, thanks to a rehabbing Brave. With one out, Jose Yepez walked. One out later, Jason Heyward hit a deep double to center field that plated Yepez. It was Heyward's fourth RBI in the past two games against SWB.
The RailRiders leveled the score in the fifth when Melky Mesa slammed the first pitch of the inning onto the walkway that overlooks the left field bullpens at PNC Field. The homer was Mesa's fourth of the season.
Mesa helped give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the lead in the sixth. Zoilo Almonte led off with a single through the left side, and moved to second on a groundout by Ronnier Mustelier. Following a walk to Dan Johnson and a Thomas Neal fielder's choice, Mesa singled to left field to bring home Almonte and give SWB the 2-1 lead.
The Braves leveled the score in the seventh. Brandon Boggs led off with a double to right field, and later scored on Joe Leonard's single to right-center.
The game remained tied at two until the ninth inning, when Mejia homered to lead off the frame. His International League leading 10th homer of the season gave the game its final margin of 3-2.
Nik Turley made his Triple-A debut for the RailRiders, and tossed six innings. He allowed just one run on two hits, and struck out four batters. Sam Demel (1-1) allowed the Mejia home run in the ninth, and picked up the loss.
Kameron Loe (1-0) picked up the win in his first appearance in a Gwinnett uniform. He worked the final out of the seventh and entire eighth inning. Cory Rasmus retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.
The contest wrapped up an eight-game home stand for the RailRiders at PNC Field. They now embark on an eight-game road trip, beginning with the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday night. Caleb Cotham (0-0, 1.93) will get the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He will square off against Toledo's Jose Alvarez (2-2, 1.50). First pitch in Toledo is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
