FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 9, 2013) - Four Miracle pitchers combined to complete an 8-0 shutout of the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
After a 59-minute rain delay prevented starter Tom Stuifbergen from returning after pitching two scoreless innings, the Miracle bullpen combined to shutout the Hammerheads in the final seven.
Cole Johnson took over for the Miracle when play resumed and tossed three innings with four strikeouts. Johnson (2-0) earned the win and lowered his earned run average to 1.06 for the season.
Dakota Watts followed Johnson with scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh. Watts tallied two strikeouts and faced the minimum. Corey Williams finished the game, holding off the Hammerheads in the ninth with a strikeout of Alex Burg to seal the victory.
The Miracle offense put up two runs in four separate innings beginning in the third. Before the weather forced a delay, the Miracle took advantage of two Jupiter errors to score two runs without a hit. With the bases loaded and one out, Matt Koch hit a grounder to third baseman Josh Adams that went between his legs and scored two.
In the fourth, Fort Myers benefitted from an RBI double off the bat of Levi Michael and a sacrifice fly from Aderling Mejia. The Miracle scored two more in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Kennys Vargas and a run-scoring single by John Murphy.
The scoring continued in the seventh inning when Joel Licon, making his debut, delivered a two-run double into right field.
Licon finished the evening 3-for-5. Murphy was also 3-for-5. Hitting seventh and eighth in the order, Licon and Murphy combined for six hits, two runs and four RBI after both being added to the Miracle roster from Extended Spring Training in the last week.
The Miracle (26-7) return to Roger Dean Stadium on Friday evening for the second of a three game series with the Hammerheads (15-18). First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. and fans can listen to every pitch at www.miraclebaseball.com. Join the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman for the Square 1 Burgers and Bar pregame show at 6:20 p.m.
