Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA- In a seesaw game of clutch hitting performances and offensive outbursts by both squads, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, outhit the Lake Erie Crushers and won 8-6 over in their first exhibition game of the 2013 season at CONSOL Energy Park on Thursday evening.
As a prelude to a game filled with a combined 31 hits and 16 runs, the Wild Things took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a double to straight away center by catcher Jim Vahalik that scored left fielder Andrew Heck and designated hitter Rick Devereaux.
In the top of the fourth inning, a pair of doubles and a single gave the Crushers the go-ahead lead, 4-2, but the Wild Things quickly responded in the bottom of the fourth on a bases clearing triple by second baseman Shain Stoner to regain the lead 5-4.
After a scoreless fifth inning for both squads, a pair of clutch pinch hits put the Crushes back ahead 6-5 but the Wild Things answered themselves in the bottom half of the sixth with an array of hits by Devereaux, shortstop Mike August and catcher Maxx Garrett and retook an 8-6 advantage.
The Wild Things added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the ninth to widen the gap 11-6.
Relievers Alfonso Yevoli and Orlando Santos, who are projected to be both the eighth and ninth inning relievers, respectively, for the Wild Things this season, pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to secure the victory.
The Wild Things and Crushers meet for two sets Friday. The evening edition is open to the public and tickets are available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office.
