Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers announce today head coach Dan Pirillo has finalized his staff for the summer and Bryan Hill and Ted Hurvul will help steer the ship in Edenton.
Hill is finishing his second season as Chowan University's top assistant baseball coach in 2013.
After graduating from Chowan in May of 2009, Hill worked locally as a personal trainer for one season before becoming a volunteer for the Hawks as their strength and conditioning coach and helping with day-to-day field coaching for the 2010 season under then head coach Aaron Carroll. In 2011 Hill began pursuing coaching full-time when he was hired on as an assistant coach at Jackson State Community College in Jackson, Tenn., where he served in the same role as strength and conditioning coach for the athletic department and as the pitching coach for the baseball team. Hill also brings Coastal Plain League knowledge and experience with him to Edenton this summer. In 2007 he suited up for the New Bern River Rats and in 2012 served as the pitching coach for the Wilson Tobs before being promoted to head coach at midseason.
Along with three years of coaching at Chowan University, Hill spent four seasons (2005-2009) as a starting pitcher and outfielder for the Hawks and still holds the school's career record for innings pitched, logging 267.1 on the mound. In 2006 he was named to the All NCCAA South Region Team as a pitcher.
Hurvul joins Coach Pirillo's staff from Washington College where he serves as an assistant under head coach Travis Turgeon and acts as the Shoremen's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. Hurvul graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2012 before being named an assistant coach at WC in July of the same year.
While at UCONN, he made 31 career pitching appearances and was a member of the Huskies' 2010 and 2011 NCAA Division I Tournament teams, pitching in the 2010 tournament. He also brings with him wood-bat summer-league experience as a player. Hurvul pitched in both the Valley League and the New England Collegiate Baseball League and this will be his Coastal Plain League coaching debut.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 60 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
