CINCINNATI, Ohio - Trevor Lewis scored 12:29 into double overtime, as the Cincinnati Cyclones topped the Gwinnett Gladiators 3-2 Saturday night at US Bank Arena.
Louis Domingue was brilliant for Gwinnett in the loss, stopping 45 shots and making a series of highlight reel stops early in the first overtime period. Game 6 is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Cincinnati. The game was supposed to be played in Gwinnett, and the Gladiators will have home privileges and wear their home uniforms for the game.
Gwinnett tied the game at two late in the second period on the power play. Casey Pierro-Zabotel hit Domenic Monardo with a centering pass, and the rookie forward was alone at the top of the crease. Monardo tried to lift a backhander over a sprawling Michael Houser, but the Cincinnati goaltender caught a piece of it and the puck ricocheted off the bottom of the crossbar. Evan Bloodoff was parked on the near post though, and hacked the rebound in to tie the game at 17:02.
That would be it for the scoring until double overtime. Cincinnati outshot the Gladiators 11-3 in the first overtime period, but Domingue stood tall to keep the game tied. Gwinnett settled down in double overtime, but Lewis caught a deflection in front on a centering pass to push the Cyclones ahead 3-2 in the best-of-seven series.
Gwinnett got off to a good start in the first, as Joey Haddad rifled a wrister from the slot over the glove of Houser to put the Gladiators ahead only 2:36 in. Sacha Guimond and Alex Belzile had the assists.
The Cyclones took over after that however, outshooting the Gladiators 16-2 in the period and tying the game at 14:16 on a goal by Garrett Wilson.
Cincinnati took a 2-1 lead at the 13:14 mark of the second period, as Wilson buried his second goal of the night, this one on the power play. However Gwinnett was able to cash in on the man advantage themselves before the period was out.
