Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - The two-time Petitt Cup Champion Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League announce today the enlistment of Josh Hampton, Tyler Eager and Beau Beaudreau (pronounced BOOD-RO) for the 2013 summer.
Hampton, a 5-11, 190-pound redshirt-junior from Wilmington University (DE), in the NCAA Division II Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, hails from West Grove, Pa. The righty is the starting third baseman and everyday three-hitter for the Wildcats this spring. Hampton spent his 2012 summer suiting up in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League for the Rockville Express. He hit .329 with 14 doubles, seven home runs and walked 22 times to 25 strikeouts, while adding a .445 on-base percentage, .593 slugging percentage and 1.038 OPS to go along with his .983 fielding average and 3.05 range factor, defensively. This spring Hampton has a .355/.410/.582 slash line for a .992 OPS with 16 doubles through 110 at-bats in 26 games while using wooden bats. He is a former two-time Division II JUCO All-Region and All-American player at Cecil College in Maryland before transferring to Wilmington in 2013. Hampton plays an excellent third base and will arrive in Edenton with consecutive wood-bat seasons under his belt between last summer and this spring. He features a prolific doubles swing along with quality home run power as a result of great bat speed and he consistently punishes pitches in the strike zone. He plays the game with grit and determination and should be an important cog for the Steamers this summer that fans will love.
Hailing from North Richland Hills, Texas, Eager is a sophomore all-lefty outfielder and first baseman at Abilene Christian University (TX) in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference. The 5-10, 180-pounder has split time at both first base and center field and is the number-two hitter this spring for the Wildcats. Eager spent his 2012 summer playing ball for the Fort Collins Foxes in the Mountain Collegiate League. He hit .433, had an on-base percentage of .503, and slugged .649 with an OPS of 1.152. He added six home runs and 23 walks to just nine strikeouts. He has continued his success this spring, hitting .296 thus far with a .369 on-base percentage, .357 slugging percentage and .726 OPS. He has walked eight times to nine strikeouts and has stolen seven bases in nine attempts. Eager is the reigning Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year and de facto MVP of the Mountain Collegiate League. He is a versatile player with the ability to man center field and first base with above average defense, as well as hit in any spot in the order. His diverse skill set allows him to beat opponents with his legs, power, plate discipline, bat or glove. Eager calls the same town home as former Steamer outfielder Nathan Burns and will be a multifaceted weapon for coach Pirillo this summer.
Beaudreau is a junior from Flagler College (FL) in the NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference and calls Atlantic Beach, Fla. home. The 6-0, 180-pound left-handed pitcher is serving as a reliever this spring for the Saints and has appeared eight times, pitching 9.2 innings and recording one save along with 12 strikeouts and a .250 batting average against. Beaudreau is a player that will complement the Steamers bullpen, an annual strength, this summer because he can create good deception and angle to left-handed hitters with his arm slot, delivery and stuff. He has been able to develop his entire pitching arsenal in college, both this spring at Flagler and for Lake Sumter Community College, by performing in every bullpen role from multi-inning relief, to closer, to situational.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain league, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
