Jurickson Profar Named Baseball's Top Prospect

Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Texas Rangers farm system has been applauded for growing some of the best talent in baseball. This year is no exception. Jurickson Profar, their highly-touted shortstop, was named the top prospect in the game by MLB.com.

"To say that Profar has moved quickly through the Rangers' system would be a gross understatement," MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo wrote. "It shouldn't be long before he's in Texas full-time, even though he'll be just 20 for all of the 2013 season. A switch-hitter, he's learned to be dangerous with the bat from both sides of the plate. He has more power than you'd think with outstanding bat speed through the strike zone. He has a good overall approach at the plate, which should allow him to hit for average. He makes things look very easy in the field, using unparalleled instincts to allow his already plus range and above-average arm play up. His makeup, work ethic and leadership all would get an 8 on the scouting scale. Now all Texas has to do is find a place for him."

In just his third professional season, Profar started the year with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders before leap-frogging the Express and landing on the Rangers post-season roster. The phenom didn't disappoint in his Major League debut on September 2, hitting a homerun in his first at-bat and knocking a double later in the game. During his September call-up, Profar saw action in nine games, five at second and three at shortstop. In 126 games with the RoughRiders, he hit a solid .281 (135-for-480) with 47 extra-base hits and 62 RBI. The 19-year-old spent most of the season at shortstop (97 games), but started 25 games at second base.

Four other Rangers prospects made the list: 3B Mike Olt (22nd), SS Luis Sardinas (84th), RHP Cody Buckel (87th), C Jorge Alfaro (88th) and LHP Martin Perez (95th).

Depending on Profar and Otl's performance in spring training, the Express are looking to have a prospect-packed roster for 2013.

Round Rock kicks off the regular season on Thursday, April 4 with an eight-game home stand that includes four-game series against Omaha (April 4-7) and Iowa (April 8-11).
