Brothers Sign Contracts to Play for Walla Walla

January 31, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL) Walla Walla Sweets

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Walla Walla Sweets fourth season will be a family affair, at least it will be for two players as the team announced today the signing of Scott and Sean Silva, brothers from Fresno, Calif. to contracts for the 2013 season. The Sweets signed each brother separately before discovering the family connection. The Silva brothers will head to Walla Walla in June to play West Coast League baseball.

"When we signed Scott and Sean we had no idea that they were related," said Sweets VP/GM Zachary Fraser. "It was a funny coincidence when we found out the two were brothers and we're excited to have them both in Walla Walla this summer."

Sean, the eldest brother, is a 5-foot 10-inch, 185-pound southpaw. A junior at University of Southern California, he transferred from Fresno City College. Last season for Fresno, Sean Silva was 6-3 with 60 strikeouts in 73 innings on the mound. He also was part of a pitching staff that threw the sixth no-hitter in Fresno CC history, earning the victory for his six innings of work. A graduate of Clovis West High School, Sean earned first team all-TRAC, was named first team all-state by MaxPreps, and was named the League MVP as a senior.

"Sean is a tremendous athlete who has shown his ability to play at the college level," said Sweets pitching coach Mark Michaud. "After this season at USC he should be well prepared for the hitters in the West Coast League."

Scott, a 5-foot, 9-inch, 165-pound infielder is a freshman at Gonzaga. Scott is a graduate of West Clovis High School where he played under head coach Kevin Patrick. As a senior he helped his team to a 28-5 record and the 2012 TRAC Championship. Silva earned ESPNHS Cal-Hi Sports State Athlete of the Week for the week of April 13, and was nominated for the CIF Central Section all-state baseball team. A three-year varsity player for West Clovis, Scott helped the Golden Eagles to a 19-11 record during his junior season, and in 2010 as a sophomore he helped the team to a 29-4 finish and the TRAC Championship.

"Scott is a very competitive player who had an excellent high school career," said Sweets manager J.C. Biagi. "He'll develop a ton under the coaching staff at Gonzaga and should be a big contributor for us this summer."

Sean and the USC Trojans will open their college season against Cal State Fullerton on February 15. Scott and the Gonzaga Bulldogs will also start their season on February 15, when they take on Utah Valley University in the Palm Springs Tournament. The Sweets' Opening Day, presented by Northwestern Mutual, is set for June 5 at 7:05 P.M. For information on tickets for the 2013 season visit wallawallasweets.com or call 509.522.BALL.
