Khoury Back at Shortstop for Wingnuts

January 28, 2013 - American Association (AA) - Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts re-signed shortstop Ryan Khoury on Monday.

Khoury (pronounced KORE-ee) ignited the Wingnuts both offensively and defensively last season, and is the team's first official player announcement for 2013. Khoury hit .256 with 18 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 38 RBI, and a .360 on-base percentage. The Salt Lake City, UT native finished third in the American Association in stolen bases (38), fourth in runs scored (79), and tied for fourth in walks (59). The 38 steals set a franchise single-season record.

"Retaining Ryan Khoury was a huge priority of ours this offseason," said Wingnuts' manager Kevin Hooper. "He brings so much to the table for us as a sparkplug offensively, and as a gold glove-caliber shortstop defensively. We were also able to utilize his speed like never before in his career. He is a true 'gamer' and is as scrappy as they come. 'Ryno' is a true pleasure to manage!"

On the other side of the ball, Khoury anchored a defense that topped the American Association in team fielding percentage, and was voted the league's Defensive Player of the Year. Khoury--who will be 29 on Opening Night--committed just 12 errors the entire season, and led all shortstops with a sparkling .972 fielding percentage.

Khoury's durability and consistency were equally as impressive as his bat and glove. The eighth-year professional started all 100 games, both at shortstop and in the leadoff spot. A right-handed hitter and defender, Khoury sat out just five total innings on defense, and reached base with a hit, walk, or hit by pitch in 87 different contests. Khoury was one of only seven players in the American Association to appear in every game, and was named Wichita's Unsung Hero at the end of the year.

Khoury was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round out of the University of Utah in 2006. During his senior season with the Utes, Khoury earned Mountain West Conference Player of the Year honors, batting .437 with 13 home runs and 56 RBI in just 56 games played. Khoury spent six years in the Red Sox' farm system, reaching the Triple-A level three times. Khoury is a lifetime .261 hitter with a .360 on-base percentage, and has averaged 102 runs scored, 35 doubles, 69 RBI, and 84 walks per 162 games played.

The 2013 season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins Thursday, May 16th against the Kansas City T-Bones at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
