Houston Aeros Fall to Wolves 3-1

Rosemont, IL - The Houston Aeros (18-14-4-3, 43 points) were defeated by the Chicago Wolves (19-12-2-2, 43 points) 3-1 on Saturday in front of 15,021 fans at Allstate Arena. Winger Bill Sweatt scored a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal in the second period, pushing Chicago past Houston. Andrew Gordon set up the first goal and added an empty-net goal for the Wolves, as Houston's road winless streak fell to eight games (0-5-2-1). Chicago goalie Joe Cannata (2-1-0) stopped 21 of 22 Aeros shots, extending Houston's overall winless skid to five straight (0-3-2-0). Aeros forward Carson McMillan scored the lone Aeros goal and goalie Matt Hackett (13-14-3) stopped 32 of 34 in the defeat. Houston will play in Peoria at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20.

After a scoreless first period of play the two teams combined for three goals in the middle frame starting at 3:52. Houston claimed a 1-0 lead off Carson McMillan's second goal of the season. Forwards Chad Rau and Brett Bulmer worked the puck down low in the Wolves zone. McMillan swept in towards the crease and jammed in a loose puck for the one-goal lead. Chicago answered with a shorthanded goal at 12:16. Bill Sweat finished off a centering feed from Andrew Gordon, redirecting the puck past Matt Hackett for the Wolves first goal. Peter Anderson added an assist on the shorthanded goal. Chicago claimed its first lead of the night with 32 seconds left in the second period. Working on the power play, Anton Rodin sent a pass to the slot and Sweatt redirected the puck past Hackett for his second goal of the night and a 2-1 lead.

With 33 seconds left in the third period, Andrew Gordon added an empty-net goal for the 3-1 final score.

Houston continues a five-game road trip on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Peoria against the Rivermen. The team returns to Toyota Center after the All-Star break, hosting Texas on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
