'Kings Knock off First Place FireAntz

SOUTHAVEN, Miss.-- The Mississippi RiverKings extended their home game winning streak to three and held off the number-one Fayetteville FireAntz 5-4 on home ice Thursday night.

The RiverKings got on the board first while on the power play at the 4:14 mark of the first period. Mike MacDonald netted his first goal of two for the night with a shot off his own rebound to poke the puck pass Marco Emond. Two minutes later, the FireAntz tied the game at one when Derek Elliot's shot goes right by a scrambling Matt Krahn. The RiverKings then took a one-goal lead heading into the first intermission when Todd Hosmer, on the power play, knocked in his own rebound past Emond at the 14:57 mark of the first period.

The hometown "˜Kings added another pair of goals in the second period. Two minutes into the second period, Todd Hosmer's second of the night beat Emond to give the RiverKings a two-goal lead. Just 19 seconds later, Patrick Gaul netted his seventh goal of the season to put the "˜Kings up by three. The FireAntz then cut the lead by one when Brandon Richardson beat Krahn on his first of two goals of the night.

But the FireAntz tried to bounce back in the final period of play. Josh McQuade picked up his twenty-first goal of the season just 32 seconds into the third period. His shot bounced off and over the shoulders of Krahn to cut the RiverKings lead to one. But the RiverKings would add to their lead. Mike MacDonald netted his second goal of the night when his shot off Matt Whitehead's rebound beat Emond's right pad. Fayetteville's final goal of the night came with 5:03 remaining in the third period. Brandon Richardson's slap shot from the point beat Krahn glove side to bring the 'Kings lead to one goal. Matthew Krahn made key saves in the remaining minitues of the third period and would hold off the FireAntz for the remainder of the game.

Matthew Krahn (8-7-3) took the win after stopping 39 of 43 shots against. Marco Emond (15-6-0) picked up the loss stopping 22 of 27 shots against.

The RiverKings hit the road again as they travel to Pensacola Saturday night to take on the Ice Flyers at 7:05 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on Sports 56, 87.7FM and the America One Sports Network. The boys return home Tuesday January 8th with a game time of 7:05 p.m. The RiverKings are celebrating Elvis Night!
