Joe Cox Wins USHL Co-Forward of the Week

MUSKEGON, Michigan (January 2nd) - The Muskegon Lumberjacks are proud to announce that Forward Joe Cox has been named as this week's "CCM Co-Forward of the Week" by the USHL, sharing the honor with Green Bay Gamblers Forward Kyle Novak.

The Chelsea, Michigan native earned the weekly honors courtesy of three breakaway goals scored in a span of two road games against Dubuque and Green Bay last Friday and Saturday nights, respectively. Last Friday, Cox scored two shorthanded goals in the third period against the Fighting Saints, while following up the next night against the Gamblers with a second period goal. Cox currently leads the team in shorthanded goals.

"It is a great honor to get the award just like getting nominated as one of captains on the team, but reaching the ultimate goal of winning a championship is what I want to achieve the most," said Cox. "I take a lot of pride in blocking shots (on the penalty kill) and being able to create scoring opportunities for my teammates, but it's always nice to get involved in the offense on occasion."

This season, Cox leads the team in total points with 26 (11 goals and 15 assists) in 31 games played and also leads the Lumberjacks in assists. Last season, the Michigan State commit totaled 20 points (6 goals and 14 assists) in 57 games played with the Lumberjacks. Prior to playing in Muskegon, Cox served two seasons in the Compuware hockey program, where he accumulated 79 points (34 goals and 45 assists) in 77 games played from 2009 to 2011.

The Lumberjacks will wrap up their five-game road trip as they will head off to Youngstown to take on the Phantoms for a pair of games this weekend on Friday and Saturday at 7:15 pm, respectively. Tickets are on sale this for the low price of $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12 for the next home game on Sunday, January 6th at 5:15 pm against the Des Moines Buccaneers if purchased before the day of the game.
