Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A Couple for the Cowbell Cup

This week, both of the Black Hawks' closest rivals are on the schedule; Waterloo visits the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday, then returns to Young Arena for a Saturday matchup with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Both games count in the three-team Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup series standings. The Hawks' series with the Saints is just beginning; seven games remain against Dubuque after Waterloo claimed the initial matchup 3-0 on November 30th. The contest with Cedar Rapids will be the fourth of eight scheduled games this season.

December in Review

The Hawks finished December with a mark of 4-5-0. Although that record was below .500, it was the first time Waterloo has claimed more than three December wins since 2008. Four players averaged better than a point per game last month, led by Taylor Cammarata with 14. The veteran paced the Hawks with five goals and tied for the team lead in assists with Zach Stepan, both at nine. Defenseman Alec McCrea led Waterloo with a +5 plus/minus rating. Goaltender Eamon McAdam earned three victories.

Variety, the Spice of Hockey Life

In three games since Christmas, the Black Hawks have recorded 20 goals. Thirteen players have contributed at least one, and no Waterloo skater has more than three in that time. The well-spread offense represents a change from earlier portions of the season. Of the first 100 goals the team recorded this season, 51 came from one of the team's top four scorers: Taylor Cammarata, Justin Kloos, Zach Stepan, or Vince Hinostroza. That group has only needed to contribute five of the past 20.

Into Double Digits

Waterloo's scoring effort Monday in a 10-2 victory against the Lincoln Stars marked the first time the Black Hawks have had ten goals in one contest since topping the Chicago Steel 10-0 on March 23, 2011. Monday's performance matched the Des Moines Buccaneers' effort on October 19th for the most scoring in a game by one team this season. Of the 18 Hawks forwards and defensemen dressed for the affair, 15 notched at least one point. Waterloo's eight power play goals tied a USHL record and exceeded the six which the Hawks had scored during the other eight games in December combined.

Weekly Recap

Sioux City edged the Hawks 4-3 in the first game back from Christmas Friday, but Waterloo recovered with two high-scoring wins in three days, 7-4 at Cedar Rapids Saturday and 10-2 versus Lincoln Monday. The stretch of three games in four days was the first of three occasions between now and the end of January when Waterloo will take the ice three times in five or fewer days.
