Petersen Shares Goalie Award

October 15, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Waterloo Black Hawks

Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawks goaltender Cal Petersen was named the United States Hockey League's co-Reebok Goaltender of the Week with Billy Christopoulos of the Des Moines Buccaneers, the USHL announced Monday.

Petersen made his 2012/13 regular season debut for the Hawks Saturday. His 25 saves helped Waterloo to a 2-0 shutout victory against the Omaha Lancers. The decision marked the first shutout of the young 2012/13 season by the Black Hawks and the first for Petersen in the league. The Waterloo native made his initial debut as a Black Hawk last winter, playing off of the club's affiliate list. In five appearances, he was 3-1-0 and stopped 90.2% of the shots he faced. During the first three weeks of hockey this year, Petersen has one of just three shutouts recorded in the USHL.

"Our goaltenders were tremendously important to accomplishing what we did last weekend," said Black Hawks head coach P.K. O'Handley. "We needed Cal and Eamon [McAdam] to be good at the end both nights, and they won us both games."

McAdam was in net Friday for a 4-1 win against the Green Bay Gamblers and made 37 saves.

Petersen is the second Black Hawk to earn Player of the Week stripes. After the first two games of the season, Vince Hinostroza was awarded the league's CCM Offensive Player of the Week award.

This weekend, Waterloo concludes a six-game homestand with two matchups before playing their next five away from Young Arena. Friday, the Hawks host the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05, and Sunday they cross sticks with the National Team Development Program at 3:05. Tickets are available online from waterlooblackhawks.com or from the Black Hawks Box Office by calling (319) 291-7680.
