THE HILLCATS: The Hillcats beat the Winston-Salem Dash 1-0 last night...RHP Gus Schlosser (2-0) tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out seven on his way to another playoff win...The only run came in to score in the fifth inning...OF Dan Brewer singled home OF David Rohm from second base with two outs...RHP Juan Jamie came in with a runner on and two outs in the eighth inning and completed a four-out save, his third of the postseason...The 'Cats now lead the Mills Cup Championship Series, a best of five set, 2-1...
VS. WINSTON-SALEM: Lynchburg split the regular season series 10-10 against the Dash...They went 6-4 in Lynchburg, winning both three-game sets 2-1 and splitting a four-game set in August 2-2...They met 20 times this year, and six times went to extra innings...Played a 13 inning game August 29 that lasted four hours and two minutes; longest Hillcats game this season...The 'Cats won 8-5...
PAST PLAYOFFS: The Hillcats are 9-3 in playoff series play...They just beat the Blue Rocks for the fourth time (4-0)...The 'Cats have gone on to win the Mills Cup two out of three times so far, after beating the Blue Rocks for the Northern Division Crown (2002, 2009)...The one time they didn't go on to win the Cup was in 2003 when they were swept in three games by Winston-Salem...That was the only time that the Hillcats have met Winston-Salem in the postseason...The Hillcats have never lost a playoff series in which they won at least one game...They've been swept three times...
KEEPING IT CLOSE: All three games this series have been decided by two runs or less...The Hillcats won game one 3-1, the Dash took game two 5-4, and last night the 'Cats were the victors 1-0...The Dash (20-13) and Hillcats (25-19) held the two best records in one-run games during the regular season...Only Potomac played in less one-run games than the Dash, as the their offense many times blew out the other team...The Dash were a league best 43-17 in games decided by three runs or more, the only team to play more than 54 "blow out" games...
THIS TIME WITH GUSTO: RHP Gus Schlosser put another exclamation point on his outstanding season last night...He capped off his Carolina League Pitcher of the Year performance with 15 scoreless (seven last night) innings in the postseason, complete with two wins and 13 strikeouts...He surpassed the 180 innings mark on the year with his outing last night, and finished with a combined ERA of 3.09 and a 15-7 record, while striking out 152...His regular season was highlighted by a 29 consecutive scoreless innings streak from July 6 to August 3...This was his first full season as a pro after being drafted in the 17th round in 2011...He pitched solely in relief in first taste of pro ball last season...
BREW'S CREW: OF Dan Brewer is hitting .333 (7-for-21) during the playoffs...That is the best average amongst Hillcats who have played in all six games so far...All seven hits are singles, and he has two RBIs including last night's game-winner...He drove in the only run in a 1-0 win over Winston-Salem...He's also scored three times, and has a hit in five of the six games...Brewer is the youngest of four brothers, all of whom played collegiate baseball, but he was the only one to go pro...
THE CLINCHER: RHP Aaron Northcraft threw six and one-third innings last Friday in Lynchburg...He gave up just one run and the Hillcats went on to win 2-1 on their way to clinching the Northern Division Championship...It was the first game this year that the Hillcats won, while Northcraft pitched but didn't earn the win himself...The 'Cats have another chance to clinch tonight with Northcraft on the mound...
BACK AND READY TO PLAY: 1B Michael Spina is back on the Hillcats' active roster tonight and starting as the designated hitter...He hasn't been active since Juan Jamie came back from the disabled list September 1...Spina is taking INF Emerson Landoni's spot since he is traveling back to Venezuela for the birth of his first child...Landoni leaves the team after batting .500 (5-for-10) in four playoff games this year...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Scott Snodgress was selected in the fifth round in 2011 by the White Sox out of Stanford University...Graduated from Yucaipa (CA) High School, where he started the 2005 CIF championship game as a freshman, and holds the school record for most career strikeouts...Played three seasons at Stanford, compiling a 4-7 record with a 5.47 ERA in 65 games, nine starts...Had four saves in 100.1 innings, 93 strikeouts, 69 walks...Pitched in the Cape, summer of 2010...Made his professional debut last year with Rookie-level Great Falls...Went 3-3 with a 3.34 ERA in 16 appearance, 12 starts...Started 2012 with Low-A Kannapolis...With the Dash, he went 4-0 with a 1.50 ERA in eight starts...Shut out the Hillcats for four innings on one hit, four walks, six strikeouts August 21...
