Behind Brilliant Pitching, Capitales Tie Series At One

New Jersey Jackals News Release

Capitales starter Karl Gelinas allowed just a Chris Henderson single through seven innings to help the Capitales to a 3-0 victory on a cool, windy Thursday at Le Stade Municipal. The two teams now head back to New Jersey with this best-of-seven championship series tied at one.

Before his start today, Gelinas was 0-5 against the Jackals since 2010, his last win coming September 11th of the 2010 Can-Am playoffs. Tonight he mimicked his seven-inning, shutout performance of two years ago.

A scoreless game into the fifth, Steve Brown lifted a two-out double to left to score Rene Leveret, breaking the scoreless tie 1-0. The following inning, the Can-Am batting champion Leveret put a two-out single through the right side to score both Josh Colafemina and Jonathan Malo to give the Capitales some breathing room with a 3-0 cushion.

The home team threatened for more the following frame, but New Jersey worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam for the second time in as many days. Colafemina struck out and the following batter Jeff Helps flew out to center. With the runner charging from third, center fielder Chris Curran fired a bullet to his catcher for the second 8-2 double play in New Jersey's last three games.

However, Gelinas was too much for New Jersey. The right hander gets the win in seven shutout, one-hit innings. He struck out six and walked one to move to 1-0 in the postseason.

He most likely would have gone longer, but a heavy rain shower after made for an extended seventh-inning stretch. The 40-minute delay broke up the flow, but New Jersey couldn't come back as Quebec has tied the series at one.

Jackals starter Mike Ness allowed three runs through six innings to earn the loss. He drops to 0-1 this postseason.

Games three, four, and five (if necessary) of the Can-Am Championship Series will be played at Yogi Berra Stadium. You can purchase your tickets here at Jackals.com or by calling (973) 746-7434.

Joe Calfapietra will call on Steve Fox (13-3, 3.57 ERA) in tomorrow's game three. Fox is 1-1 in two starts against the Capitales this season, but won his most recent, throwing six one-run innings for the win on Sunday.

Fox was 9-0 following a Jackals loss during the regular season.

Pat Scalabrine will call on Bryan Rembisz (10-4, 4.17 ERA). The crafty righty has thrown 25 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings against New Jersey.

First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 with the pregame show beginning 15 minutes prior.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling (973) 746-7434.
