New Jersey Jackals News Release

The Jackals used early power to pace their eventual 6-2 win over the Quebec Capitales. They take a 1-0 advantage in the 2012 Can-Am Championship Series.

Angel Berroa wasted no time giving the Jackals a lead - his first-inning home run to right-center put New Jersey up 1-0 on a low 70s, clear night at Le Stade Municipal.

Quebec threatened in the bottom of the first. Jackals starter Isaac Pavlik allowed the Capitales to load the bases with nobody out, but induced a shallow fly ball by the Can-Am's batting champion Rene Leveret, promptly followed by a 5-3 double play off Josue Peley's bat to keep the score 1-0.

Same score into the top of the fourth when Francisco Caraballo lifted a lead-off home run to left-center to put New Jersey up 2-0.

The Capitales finally broke through against Pavlik in the bottom of the fifth via Josh Colafemina's RBI single, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

In the sixth, Bryan Sabatella and Caraballo smacked back-to-back triples to help end Duda's night. The Can-Am's Pitcher of the Year allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings to earn the loss. Duda was 15-1 in the regular season but drops to 0-1 in the postseason.

Pavlik gets the win in six innings of work. He ties a season-high with three walks but allows just an unearned run off four hits. Jake Hale and Keith Cantwell combined for three innings of one-run ball to secure the 6-2 win.

Caraballo finished his day 2-5 with a home run, a triple, and three RBIs. Guzman, Giarraputo, and Berroa also chipped in a pair of hits. Guzman's included an RBI single in the eighth.

With the win, New Jersey steals home-field advantage from the Capitales. Up 1-0 in the best-of-seven series, the Jackals and Capitales will face off in game two tomorrow at 7:05. The pregame show begins 10 minutes prior. New Jersey will call on Mike Ness (2-1, 2.57 ERA) to oppose Karl Gelinas (9-4, 2.66 ERA). Gelinas is 0-2 in three starts against New Jersey this year.

Games three, four, and five (if necessary) of the Can-Am Championship Series will be played at Yogi Berra Stadium. You can purchase your tickets here at Jackals.com or by calling (973) 746-7434.
