New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ "" The Jackals finished up their home-portion of the regular season with a 10-9, back-and-forth win over the Newark Bears.

New Jersey showed resiliency, coming from behind three separate times en route to their slugfest win.

Down 1-0 after the top of the first, Francisco Caraballo skied a three-run homer over the right-center field wall to give New Jersey the 3-1, first-inning lead.

Newark would come right back with three runs in the top of the second to retake the lead 4-3.

One half inning later (bottom 2), Bryan Sabatella doubled home two to leapfrog the Jackals ahead of the Bears 5-4.

One half inning later (top 3), Charlie Stewart, son of manager Chuck, lifted a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at five.

One half inning later (bottom 3), Ángel Berroa's home run put New Jersey back on top 6-5.

One half inning later (top 4), Orlando Mercado's home run coupled with Ryde Rodriguez's two-run double put Newark up 8-6.

At least one run was scored in every half inning until the bottom of the third. The first 3 1/2 innings featured 14 runs, 16 hits, and five lead changes.

New Jersey came back one last time in the fifth inning when Gaetano Giunta's single knocked in the game-tying run. Edgard Clemente's RBI double one inning later would give New Jersey the game's final lead change, putting New Jersey up 9-8 to their eventual 10-9 win.

It wasn't a good day for the starting pitchers. Kyle Greenwalt allowed eight runs off nine hits. He throws four innings and earns the no-decision.

Newark's Omar Javier couldn't record an out in the third inning, but earns the no-decision. He allowed six runs off eight hits.

Jake Hale came on in relief of Greenwalt and threw two scoreless frames. He earns his first win with the Jackals and improves to 1-1.

Former Jackals' reliever Marc Rutledge allowed Clemente's RBI double in the sixth and earns his first loss in his first decision with the Newark Bears.

For New Jersey, Bryan Sabatella was 4-6 with a double and three RBIs.

Berroa was 2-2 with three walks in his first game in almost a week. Matt Nandin and Chris Henderson both chipped in with a pair of base hits and a pair of runs.

Orlando Mercado highlighted the offense for the Bears. The catcher was 3-5 and fell a triple shy of the cycle.

With the win New Jersey improves to 58-39, finalizing their regular season home record at 29-21, second best to the Quebec Capitales. New Jersey and Quebec will finish up the regular season with a meaningless three-game set before beginning the best-of-seven Can-Am Championship series September 5th.
