Kazmir Too Much for 'Fish

(Sugar Land, TX. - August 29, 2012) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (22-23, 53-62), suffered a series loss against the Sugar Land Skeeters (24-23, 53-64) on Wednesday as the road team was defeated by a score of 6-1 at Constellation Field. Bridgeport is 7-9 against Sugar Land this season and trails Southern Maryland by four-and-a-half games in the Liberty Division standings after a Blue Crabs loss against the York Revolution.

Bridgeport outfielder, Prentice Redman, smacked his fourteenth homer of the season in the opening frame to give the Bluefish the teams' only lead of the night. His shot to left was one of two times Redman reached base. Luis Figueroa contributed the only other hit on the night. James Simmons' nineteen game on-base streak ended as the outfielder went 0-3.

Sugar Land outfielder, Bubba Bell, drove in two runners with a single to right in the opening frame. Manny Mejia and Iggy Suarez served back-to-back solo homers in the eighth. Both players reached base twice on the night. Ofilio Castro and Dominic Ramos brought in the other runs for the winning side. Castro reached base four times on the evening while Ramos got on twice.

Bluefish starter, Gilbert De La Vara (9-8), suffered the loss as the southpaw completed six-and-one-third innings of four run, eight hit, two walk and four strikeout baseball. Julio DePaula completed the rest of the game. The righthanded relief pitcher served one-and-two-thirds frames and allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while fanning one batter.

Skeeters starter, Scott Kazmir (1-6), earned his first victory since September 19, 2010 by throwing eight frames of one run, two hit, one walk and three strikeout baseball. Roberto Giron finished the game with a scoreless ninth and gave up one walk.

The Bluefish return to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard to start a three-game series against the Somerset Patriots on Friday, August 31. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with the gates opening one hour before first pitch. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a Tote Bag Giveaway presented by Universal Sales. Bridgeport righthanded pitcher, Brad Thompson (3-3, 4.14 ERA) will be opposed by Somerset righthanded hurler Derell McCall (7-5, 4.50 ERA).
