Great Falls Voyagers News Release
MISSOULA - The Great Falls Voyagers (34-33, 10-19) mounted a scary rally in the ninth inning but couldn't climb out of an early hole and fell to the Missoula Osprey (35-32, 17-12) 6-4 Tuesday night at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. The Voyagers hurt themselves badly with a variety of self-inflicted wounds including a season-high five errors.
Chris Beck (3-3) picked up the start for the Voyagers and was immediately put in trouble by his defense. A pair of errors extended the first inning and Beck couldn't end it before the Osprey scored three times for a 3-0 lead. Facing starter Chris Pack, the Voyagers were held off until the third when Micah Johnson tripled to lead off the inning, Michael Johnson drove him home, and Brent Tanner plated another with a double to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Osprey didn't let the game remain that way for long as a bad-hop turned a double play ball into a fluke single and Yosbel Gutierrez made it count with a 2-run home run for a 5-2 lead. The Osprey added an extra run on a pair of errors in the sixth to lead 6-2.
Pack finished six innings with six strikeouts and gave way to reliever Chris Capper who struck out the side in the seventh and eighth innings to send the Voyagers to the ninth trailing by four. Against shut-down righty Justin Thompson, the Voyagers rallied by drawing a trio of walks to load the bases with two outs. Micah Johnson worked the count full and came through with a two-run single to center to cut the lead in half and put himself on base as the tying run, but Thompson picked up the Osprey's sixteenth strikeout of the game to seal the 6-4 Missoula win.
The Voyagers finish the two-game series tomorrow night in at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. Brandon Brennan starts for the Voyagers against Osprey Karl Triana. The game starts at 7:15 PM and can be heard on ESPN Montana 99.9 FM.
