PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of August 13th through August 19th:
Reading Phillies first baseman/outfielder Darin Ruf has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of August 13th-August 19th. The 26-year old batted .346 (9-for-26) with five home runs, 10 RBI, six runs scored, three walks and a .923 slugging percentage in seven games for the R-Phils last week. Ruf, who is a native of Omaha, Nebraska, started his week by hitting a pair of home runs in an 8-4 win over Trenton on Monday night. He went on to hit home runs on Tuesday and Wednesday as well, which extended his streak to five consecutive games with a homer. Ruf added his league-leading 30th homer of the season on Sunday at Akron. He also leads the league in slugging percentage (.590), extra-base hits (60) and total bases (255). The 6'3", 220 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in home runs (5), RBI (10) and total bases (24) last week and also finished ranked among the weekly league leaders in OPS (1.337-2nd), slugging percentage (.923-2nd), runs scored (6-tied 3rd), extra-base hits (5-tied 4th) and hits (9-tied 6th). Darin, who was also named the Eastern League Player of the Week earlier this season for the period of May 7th-13th, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 20th round of the 2009 draft out of Creighton University.
Jacob Pettit, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Bowie Baysox, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 13th-August 19th. The 6'1", 185 lb. hurler started one game for the Baysox last week and had a record of 1-0 with five strikeouts and a 1.17 ERA. Pettit, who is a native of Orting, Washington, made his lone appearance of the week on Saturday night at Trenton and took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 3-2 victory for the Baysox. He retired the first four batters of the game before hitting a batter in the bottom of the second, and then retired the next 18 batters he faced prior to losing his no-hit bid on a solo home run with one out in the eighth. Pettit finished the game with five strikeouts and one walk while improving his record to 9-3 on the season. The 25-year old led all Eastern League players in WHIP (0.26) and batting average against (.042) last week. He also finished ranked among the weekly league leaders in wins (1-tied 4th) and ERA (1.17-9th). Jacob, who has a record of 3-1 with 29 strikeouts and a 3.64 ERA over 42 innings in eight appearances for the Baysox since the Eastern League All-Star Break, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 42nd round of the 2010 draft out of Western Oregon State College.
