Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

BOUNCED IN THE RUBBER MATCH: For the second straight night, the Wilmington Blue Rocks had no answer for the bats of the Winston-Salem Dash, as they dropped the rubber game of the three-game series, 9-2.

HIT PARADE: The Blue Rocks allowed a season-worst 19 hits in Thursday's setback. It marks the most hits the Rocks have given up in a single game since the 2010 regular-season finale September 6 at Frawley Stadium when the Frederick Keys scored 14 runs on 19 hits. Starter Leondy Perez gave up 10 of the knocks, tying for the most allowed by a single Wilmington hurler in a game this season.

DIME TIME: Geulin Beltre picked up his 19th outfield assist when he gunned down Michael Earley in the seventh inning. His total is good enough for second in the Carolina League behind Potomac's Michael Taylor (21). Salem's Brandon Jacobs (10) is the only other outfielder in the league that has reached double digits this season. With knocks in 14 of his last 17, Beltre has hit .387 (24-for-62) in lifting his average by 34 points to .240.

FOR THE RECORD: The Blue Rocks fell to 1-7 in rubber matches and 9-25 in the last game of a series.

DASHED: The Blue Rocks finished the year against Winston-Salem with a 5-15 record, including a 2-8 mark at Frawley Stadium.

RISPY BUSINESS: The Blue Rocks were 1-for-7 with men in scoring position on Thursday. They only have 17 hits in their last 102 at-bats (.167) with RISP dating back to the beginning of their most recent road trip. On the season, Wilmington has hit a league-worst .230 with men at second and/or third. Winston-Salem, which went 7-for-11 in such circumstances last night, leads the loop at .291. The two teams are represent the top (Winston-Salem, 5.7) and bottom (Wilmington, 3.8) run-scoring teams in the league based on per-game average.

NOT-SO-MAGIC NUMBER: The Rocks have gotten little production from the No. 3 spot in the lineup this season. Minus the numbers of the since-promoted prospect Brian Fletcher, three-hole hitters have a meager average of .207 (72-for-347) with 65 strikeouts.

SOUTHERN COMFORT: A dozen games into their run of 15 straight against Southern Division squads, the Rocks are 4-8. They own a 25-48 (.342) record in interdivisional play. That is in stark contrast to their 25-17 (.595) mark in intradivisional competition. Once this long run against the South concludes, Wilmington's schedule ends with 18 of the final 22 contests against its brothers in the North.

FIRST THINGS SECOND: With yesterday's loss and Frederick's 3-1 defeat of Lynchburg, the Keys snapped a tie atop the CL North with the Blue Crew. Wilmington, Frederick and Potomac are all within 1.5 games of each other for the division's second-half playoff spot. The four-time Carolina League champion Blue Rocks are attempting to make their first playoff appearance since pacing the loop with 84 wins in 2009.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: Wilmington and Salem represent two of the top-three defenses in the Carolina League. Each squad owns a .972 fielding percentage, tying the team's for second behind only Myrtle Beach (.974). However, while Salem (.333) trails only Winston-Salem (.396) in caught-stealing efficiency, the Blue Crew ranks dead last (.268).
