Pennant Race Heats up at Zephyr Field

Metairie, LA - Pennant race baseball comes to Zephyr Field for the first time in five years when the New Orleans Zephyrs open an eight-game homestand by hosting the Fresno Grizzlies on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Winners of 10 of their last 13 contests, the Zephyrs have passed Oklahoma City for second place in the American Southern Division, and trail first-place Albuquerque by four games with 25 games remaining in the season. 16 of those games will take place at home, where the Zephyrs have won six in a row. The Z's have not been this close to first place in August since their last division crown in 2007.

The pitching probables for the weekend series are as follows:

Friday 7 pm vs. Fresno : RH Elih Villanueva (8-6, 3.97 ERA) vs. RH Yusmeiro Petit (5-4, 3.25)

Saturday 6 pm vs. Fresno : RH Tom Koehler (11-8, 3.45) vs. LH Jason Stevenson (4-5, 6.78)

Sunday 6 pm vs. Fresno : RH Omar Poveda (3-1, 3.89) vs. RH Boof Bonser (0-1, 5.56)

Monday 7 pm vs. Fresno : RH Jacob Turner (1-0, 2.65) vs. RH Eric Hacker (12-5, 3.99)

Fireworks follow Friday's homestand opener, and fans can play In-to-win for the opportunity to win a variety of prizes, including a 32-inch flatscreen television from Advanced Audio & Video. The first 1,000 fans in attendance for Saturday's 6:00 game will receive the 2012 Zephyrs baseball card set, courtesy of East Jefferson General Hospital, and all fans are invited to play Baseball Bingo, for a chance to win prizes from Treasure Chest Casino.

Coca-Cola Kids Day returns on Sunday at 6:00, as Big Easy Amusements will provide pregame entertainment on the plaza. All children ages 12 and under receive $5 admission, and are invited onto the field after the game to run the bases, presented by Cox Communications. The series with Fresno concludes with Senior Citizen Night, offering discounted $5 admission for fans ages 60 and up to Monday's 7:00 game.
