Generals Take Series with 9-2 Thrashing of Smokies

KODAK, TENN. (JULY 17, 2012) - The Generals won their third straight Tuesday night 9-2, at Smokies Park, winning the series over Tennessee, taking three of four. Jackson (58-37, 16-9) has now won five consecutive series. The Generals have scored 19 runs in their last two games and 47 runs over the last six contests. With the win, Jackson is now 13-6 over the Smokies and 9-5 in games at Smokies Park.

The Generals started their scoring in the third on a 2-run homer from Francisco Martinez in his second at-bat. Joe Dunigan and Rich Poythress followed with RBI singles and Jackson jumped out to a 4-0 advantage.

Dunigan pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning with an estimated 455 foot homer to right. The homer was Joe's third of the series and league leading 19th of the season.

With two outs in the sixth inning Jackson pushed the lead to 9-0 on back-to-back singles from Leury Bonilla and Martinez - then Denny Almonte and Stefen Romero followed with RBI doubles.

Tennessee finally got on the board, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on RBI hits from Justin Bour and Greg Rohan.

Brandon Maurer (7-2) collected his 10th quality start and allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits in 6.0 innings. Maurer matched a season-high with 7 strikeouts. Jonathan Arias and Jose Jimenez combined for 3.0 scoreless innings of relief behind Maurer.

Poythress was 2-for-3 and extended his team-high hitting streak to 13 games. Chih-Hsien Chaing upped his hitting streak to 8 games going 1-for-5. Dunigan finished the night, 2-for-5 with the homer and 3 RBI's. Martinez in his first game back from the DL was 3-for-5 with a homer and 2 RBI. Stefen Romero collected his 12th multi-hit game in 21 Jackson games and was 2-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI's.

The Generals return to Pringles Park Thursday after a day off on Wednesday to face the Huntsville Stars, with pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Jackson will send to the mound RHP Forrest Snow (1-3, 4.41) while RHP Josh Stinson (9-5, 3.23) is scheduled to make the start for Huntsville.
