Fernandez Outduels Sheets as Generals Take Opener 4-2

PEARL, MISS. (JULY 4, 2012) - The Generals picked up their 50th win of the season on Independence Day at Trustmark Park, 4-2. Anthony Fernandez outdueled four-time NL All-Star Ben Sheets and earned his third win in three starts for Jackson. The game was played in front of the third largest crowd in Trustmark Park history, 7,093.

The Generals got to Ben Sheets early on Wednesday by scoring four runs in the first two innings. Stefen Romero picked up an RBI triple followed by a Kalian Sams RBI single giving Jackson a 2-0 after the first inning.

In the second inning, Romero struck again with a two out 2-run double off the center field wall plating Pettit and Leury Bonilla.

The M-Braves wouldn't be shut out as they trimmed the Generals lead with single runs scoring against Jackson starter Anthony Fernandez in the fifth and sixth innings.

Fernandez followed back-to-back complete games with 7.0 innings on Wednesday, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, striking out 4 and walking just 1. Ben Sheets, making his first pro start since July 19, 2009 with the Oakland A's allowed 4 runs on 5 hits over 5.0 innings pitched, striking out 6 and walking 1. Sheets retired the final 10 batters faced.

Carter Capps earned his 14th save of the season with 1.1 scoreless innings. It was the 9th time Capps has gone more than an inning for the save.

Stefen Romero was 2-for-4 offensively for the Generals with a double, triple and 3 RBI. Romero has hit in 12 of 13 Jackson games with eight multi-hit games. Chris Pettit was 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 runs scored.

The Generals continue their three-game series with Mississippi on Thursday night at Trustmark Park, with first pitch at 7:00 p.m. RHP Taijuan Walker (4-4, 4.43) will make the start for Jackson against RHP David Hale (6-3, 3.52) for the M-Braves.
