Tri-City Dust Devils News Release

It wasn't just another lazy Sunday for the Tri-City Dust Devils, as they needed extra innings to defeat the Boise Hawks 2-1 Sunday night at Gesa Stadium. Tied at one after nine, Dust Devils outfielder Derek Jones came up in the bottom of the 10th with the bases loaded and one out and delivered a deep fly ball to centerfield to score Francisco Sosa for the game-winning run.

Tri-City (6-11) starting pitcher Josh Slaats pitched another gem, throwing seven innings and allowing one run on six hits while striking out six and walking one. Slaats lowered his season earned run average to 1.71 on the year after the outing, the fifth lowest in the Northwest League. Brook Hart relieved Slaats, throwing two perfect innings and keeping his streak of not allowing a run this season alive. Righty Seth Willoughby (1-0) then pitched the tenth and earned his first professional win after throwing one shutout inning.

Boise (6-11) starter James Pugliese pitched well for the Hawks in his fourth start of the year, throwing four shutout innings in which he allowed two hits while striking out five. Rafael Diplan (1-1) took his first loss of the year, coming on in the tenth and allowing the Dust Devils' winning run.

Sosa was the catalyst for the Dust Devils' offense on the night, going 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored. He got the Dust Devils on the board in the fifth inning, hitting a sacrifice-fly to bring home catcher Anthony Aguilera. Sosa then got the extra-inning rally started, reaching base with one out in the inning and eventually reaching third after a wild pitch and two walks. Jones, a Washington State University graduate, then came to the plate and put the ball deep enough into centerfield for Sosa to easily tag up and score to give the Dust Devils their sixth win of the year.

Game two of the three game series between the Dust Devils and Hawks is Monday night. It will be Coca-Cola Monday at the ballpark, as righty Ben Hughes takes the mound for the Dust Devils against right-hander Tayler Scott for the Hawks. As with every Coca-Cola Monday, all 22-ounce Coke products will be on sale for just one dollar all night long!
